A rescued Nigerian-Libyan migrant, Mercy Olugbenga, has recounted her ordeal in the Arab country.

Speaking in an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday, Mercy said she was being locked up for one year at her place of work, and her blood was being transfused every month.

“My mom was sick. She had a kidney problem, so we had to sell all our properties, and there was nothing else. It’s just my brother and I. There is no family anywhere. All our family deserted us, so there is no option.

“I didn’t even know I was going. It was a day before I knew I was traveling. I heard from someone that there’s a job in Libya. I didn’t even think it twice. I just said, I’ll follow you.

“I didn’t know any country named Libya as at then. I only heard it that day, and I decided, okay, let me let me follow. So what I experienced in Libya, not me alone, other Africans and other illegal migrants. Those people, Arab people don’t like us; they treated us like animals.

“In the place I worked, I was locked up for a year. In my room, they lock the door before going out. They lock the house side door, they lock the gate door.

“So I was stranded in the house. But along the line, I got to know that the mother I was originally to take care of, had medical issues, which is kidney transplants and all that. So within those period, every month, they bring a nurse home to transfuse my blood,” she narrated.
