WEST HAM took a massive stride towards Premier League safety with a statement win over Sunderland.

Granit Xhaka was ruled out with an injury for the Black Cats and it was a sign of how things would go at the London Stadium.

The hosts got off to the perfect start as Crysencio Summerville headed in from Jarrod Bowen’s cross in the 14th minute.

The captain then made it 2-0 in the 28th minute from the spot after Ollie Scarles was brought down by Trai Hume in the box.

The Hammers were in dreamland just before half-time as Mateus Fernandes slammed in the third from 30 yards.

Brian Brobbey gave the visitors hope of a comeback in the 66th minute as he headed home with his fifth in the Prem this season.

Luke O’Nien almost cut the deficit to one with a sensational fluke goal as the ball flew off his toe from outwide only for Alphonse Areola to push it against the bar.

Tomas Soucek thought he made it four in the 92nd minute with his back, only for the goal to be ruled out for a foul on goalkeeper Robin Roefs.

The win sees West Ham cut the gap to 17th-placed Nottingham Forest to just two points ahead of their visit to Brentford on Sunday.
