NUNO ESPIRITO SANTO asserts that he would never overlook Callum Wilson merely to save money.

With two losses and a draw under Nuno's management, the Hammers remain trapped in the relegation zone.

The manager certainly needs goals following 2-0 defeats to both Arsenal and Brentford.

However, he has yet to give summer signing Callum Wilson—a player with 89 Premier League goals—a single MINUTE in his three matches at the helm.

This has fueled speculation that Wilson's contract is the reason behind his lack of playing time.

The former striker, now 33, left on a free transfer in the summer, concluding a five-season stint on Tyneside.

Typically, this would lead to a lucrative contract elsewhere, but Wilson's injury history meant that the Hammers were only willing to offer a deal heavily contingent on his actual playing time.

Nuno dismissed the notion that financial considerations were behind the decision not to give the ex-Bournemouth player a chance.

The 51-year-old stated: “Come on. I’m not even aware of his contract details.

“Do you really believe I’m that kind of person? Perhaps if you knew me better, we wouldn’t have to discuss this.

“There’s nothing to it. This speculation is unhelpful.

“Do you think I consider all these factors when making decisions to benefit the team? Come on.”

He refuted the idea that Wilson, who has nine international caps, felt neglected.

He remarked: “Wilson is here with us. There’s nothing going on. Please don’t create any narratives.

“It’s simply a decision. Let’s see if this game can turn things around.

“There’s a future for everyone. All players are crucial.

“Especially in such a challenging situation. We need all of them.”

However, it is undeniable that Nuno has opted for another striker instead of Wilson to come off the bench during both London derby defeats.

Academy graduate Callum Marshall, 20, played the last half hour against Arsenal and again at home against Brentford.

The Northern Ireland striker’s only senior club goals came last season when he scored nine during a loan spell at Huddersfield.

Nuno acknowledged that this strategy had not been effective.

He stated: “We decided on Callum to see if he could exploit spaces and utilize his speed behind the defense.

“It didn’t work out as planned. But that was the sole reason.”

Winger Summerville, 23, showed promising signs against Brentford that brighter days might be ahead.

The Dutchman, acquired for £25 million from Leeds in 2024, struggled with injuries last season but has been a dynamic presence this term.

Nuno added: “I believe he can provide significant assistance in the future, especially starting against his former club.”
