The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed allegations made by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, claiming that the agency is being manipulated by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and other political figures to target him for his refusal to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

This response from the anti-graft agency comes after the arraignment of Bauchi State Finance Commissioner Yakubu Adamu and three others on December 31, 2025, regarding alleged terrorism financing and money laundering involving $9.7 million in state funds that were reportedly approved by the governor.

In a statement released on Friday, the EFCC referred to Mohammed’s accusations as “wild” and “far-fetched,” asserting that it operates independently and free from political pressure.

“The Commission is non-partisan and fulfills its mandate without bias or malice,” the statement read, cautioning that depicting the EFCC as a tool for political agendas is “mischievous and unacceptable.”

The anti-graft agency rejected any insinuations that Wike or any political officeholder could sway its investigations, labeling such claims as “derogatory” and misleading.

The EFCC also highlighted that Mohammed had previously faced money laundering charges before ascending to the governorship, noting that only constitutional immunity has prevented the case from proceeding.

“Who influenced the Commission to investigate and charge him in 2016?” it questioned.

According to the EFCC, the evidence against certain Bauchi State officials is already before the court, allowing Nigerians to determine whether the case is motivated by vengeance or by “thorough investigation.”

It further explained that Mohammed's name is included in the charges because he was the approving authority for the transactions in question.

The agency cautioned against downplaying allegations of terrorism financing, emphasizing its commitment to enforcing existing laws wherever violations are identified.

“It is the height of hypocrisy for opposition politicians to claim persecution whenever one of their own is investigated, yet remain silent when members of the ruling party are charged,” the statement noted, adding that the EFCC recently prosecuted a senior member of the ruling party without similar outcry.

The Commission urged Governor Mohammed to concentrate on governing Bauchi State and allow the EFCC to fulfill its role in sanitizing Nigeria’s financial system.
