The Abia State government has called on communities within the state to collaborate on land acquisition matters, assuring them that their land will not be taken without appropriate compensation provided.
The Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, made this statement on Monday while informing journalists about the results of this week’s executive council meeting led by Governor Alex Otti.
He noted that the current administration in Abia has consistently provided what he referred to as generous compensation, even though the 1978 Land Use Act assigns ownership of all major land to the government.
“Communities should work together with the government; under the leadership of this administration and Governor Alex Otti, Abians will not be disadvantaged regarding land acquired for projects,” Kanu stated.
He also reassured the communities that land acquired for specific purposes would not be repurposed for different projects.
Additionally, he announced that the state government has approved the implementation of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) for local government employees in the state.
According to the commissioner, the approval of CONHESS is part of ongoing reforms in the state civil service, aimed at enhancing the welfare of workers.
“This commendable initiative positions Abia State among the few states in the country that pays the federal government’s Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS),” he noted.
He revealed that the recruitment portal for health workers has been reopened and mentioned that there are vacancies for ophthalmologists, medical officers, dental officers, as well as part-time and full-time consultants.
