The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has claimed responsibility for a major attack on a Nigerian Army base in Marte, Borno State.

In a message posted on its Telegram channel, the group said its fighters stormed the military base in the early hours of Monday.

According to the group, its fighters engaged Nigerian soldiers in a fierce gun battle that lasted for about an hour, after which they overran the base, allegedly killing many soldiers and forcing others to flee.

The attack is the latest in a series of assaults by the insurgents on towns including Marte, Dikwa, Rann, and Gajiram, where several lives were reportedly lost, properties destroyed, and weapons looted.
