The Taraba state commissioner of Women Affairs and Child Development, Mrs. Mary Sinjen, has reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to the protection of women and children, stressing that no individual, regardless of status or connections, would be allowed to harm a child and evade justice.
She gave the assurance on Monday in Jalingo while playing host to the 17-year old girl, Miss Iwasen Terhemba, who was recently assaulted in Donga local government council following a false allegation linking her to a relationship with a married man.
The incident, which reportedly involved an attack with a razor blade, was allegedly carried out by Mrs. Rammatu Abbas, wife of Mr. Abbas, who was accused of persistently disturbing the minor.
The case attracted widespread public attention after journalists displayed the pictures of the victim’s injuries online, thereby prompting swift intervention by the state government.
The Commissioner who facilitated the evacuation of the victim and her guardians to Jalingo to ascertain the facts surrounding the incident and ensure their safety and welfare, expressed relief that the victim is responding positively to treatment.
She recalled coming across the disturbing report of the injured teenager on social media and other channels of communication which she said prompted her to immediately direct the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Rev. Eric Juyoh Madu, and other directors to urgently follow up the case.
The Commissioner who disclosed that the ministry later learned that the police had already charged the matter to court, expressing concern over reports that the court advised an out-of-court settlement on the grounds that the victim had forgiven the suspects.
“This is not just a private matter between individuals. It is an offense against the Taraba state government and a violation of the laws protecting children. This government will not fold its arms while a child is harmed. Justice must be served, and this case will be pursued to its logical conclusion,” Sinjen said.
Reiterating the ministry’s resolve to safeguard the rights, dignity, and wellbeing of women and children across the state, she announced that efforts are ongoing to apprehend Mr. Abbas and ensure that all those involved in the assault are brought to justice.
Our reporter gathered that the whereabouts of Mr. Abbas who went ahead to divorced his wife immediately after the incident is unknown.
