Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has charged the leadership of community development unions to institute and enforce good leadership in various communities in Abia State and Nigeria at large.

He regretted that there are some communities where people of questionable character are still occupying development union leadership.

Governor Otti stated this on Wednesday while receiving members of the Abia State Association of Igbo Town Unions, led by its President General, George Mgbeorurukwe, in his office.

He maintained that his administration only wants the right people in leadership positions, not thieves, fraudsters, or moneybags without a credible trace of their wealth.

“We don’t want thieves. We don’t want drug dealers, and we don’t want 419 people as leaders of town unions.

“Because, if your leader is a thief, he will teach people to steal. If he is a drug addict, if you arrest somebody, he would want to bribe you to release him,” Otti said.

The Abia Governor declared that his administration is always interested in knowing who the leadership of the town unions are.

He challenged the Abia State Association of Igbo Town Unions to go back and ensure that the leadership that would be produced in communities are the ones the people will be proud of.

Otti, who urged the union leaders to give intelligence and credible information to government and security agencies to enable them to curb criminality in rural areas, granted the request of the union for a piece of land to locate its office in the state.
