War: US wants to abandon Russia-Ukraine peace talk – EU says

Published on May 01, 2025 at 05:31 AM

The European Union, EU, has said that there are indications that the United States of America wants to abandon its efforts to end the war between Ukraine and Russia.

For this reason, the EU said it is preparing a “plan B”; on how to keep economic sanctions against Russia should the US decides to quit.

It said the US could abandon the peace talk and and seek rapprochement with Moscow.

The EU’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, there are signs this could happen.

Kallas told reporters, according to Financial Times, “We see signs that they are contemplating whether they should leave Ukraine and not try to get a deal with the Russians because it’s hard.”;

Meanwhile, the Kremlin has maintained that President Vladimir Putin was open to peace despite its continued missile attacks on Ukraine.

However, it stressed that the conflict is so complicated that the rapid progress that the US wants is difficult to achieve, Reuters reported.

In another development, Russia’s prime minister, Mikhail Mishustin, has said that his country and North Korea have begun construction of a road bridge between the two countries as part of an effort to strengthen their strategic partnership.

It comes after South Korean lawmakers said about 600 North Korean troops have been killed fighting for Russia against Ukraine.
