They’ve had years of planning a home World Cup and now the USA finally kick-off their hosting party with their opening game against Paraguay.

Mauricio Pochettino has been linked with a host of Europe’s top clubs in the recent past but appears to have knocked those all back for THIS moment – leading out the US in front of their own supporters.

And they’ve been handed a pretty favourable draw to at least get some run out of this and are currently favourites with the bookmakers to win their group.

It all starts against the South American side, with the USA arriving having lost three of their last four games – all against European sides.

Germany, Portugal and Belgium have all had the benefit of friendlies against the US since March and have all come away victorious, with just a win against Senegal for the hosts in that time.

It’s also been a year since their last competitive match, which was the Gold Cup final defeat to Mexico last July.

In South American qualifying, Paraguay claimed the sixth and final automatic qualification spot, though did finish level of points with Brazil, Uruguay and Colombia and just a point behind Ecuador who finished second.

They beat Nicaragua in their final warm-up friendly last week but did lose 2-1 to the US in a friendly back in November – just weeks before the draw was made.

The oddsmakers have USA odds-on heading into this one, likely down to the fact it’s a home World Cup.

Everything points in their favour but a lack of competitive game for almost a year and the weight of expectation could well work against them. Paraguay arrive here after a 4-0 win last time out and have had tight games with Morocco (2-1 defeat) and Greece (1-0 win) this year.

A very tight friendly between the teams in November ended in a 2-1 USA win but there was very little between the sides that night and something similar can play out here – only tighter!
