American hip-hop artist Wiz Khalifa has received a nine-month prison sentence from a Romanian court due to a drug-related offense linked to a live performance in the country last year.

The conviction was issued in absentia after prosecutors successfully challenged a prior ruling that had only imposed a financial penalty.

Khalifa, whose real name is Cameron Jibril Thomaz, was detained in July 2024 for allegedly smoking cannabis during a live show at a music festival in Costinești, a resort town along Romania’s Black Sea coast.

He was briefly held by authorities before being released and subsequently issued a public apology, stating that his actions were not meant to disrespect Romanian laws or culture.

Initially, the Constanța Tribunal fined the rapper 3,000 lei, approximately $690. Unhappy with this outcome, prosecutors from the Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) appealed, arguing that the offense deserved a custodial sentence.

The appellate court concurred, replacing the fine with a nine-month prison term for the illegal possession of a high-risk drug for personal use. Reports suggest that this decision is final under Romanian law.

Wiz Khalifa is currently residing in the United States, and it remains unclear whether Romanian authorities will pursue his extradition.

There has been no confirmation regarding the enforcement of the sentence.

Romania has strict anti-drug laws, with cannabis banned for both recreational and medical use.
