had the opportunity to complete the career Grand Slam with victory on “the hardest course in the world” tonight.

And a new champion will certainly be crowned after holder JJ Spaun shot an opening-round 77, resulting in an early exit from the tournament.

Meaning that he is closing in on the title and the record-breaking prize money.

What is the US Open 2026 prize money?

Last Wednesday, USGA CEO Mike Whan announced that the total prize money will be a total of $22.5million (approx £17m) which is a $1m (£750,000) increase from last year’s event.

This is the fifth bump in the overall purse in the last six years.

It also means that the winner will pocket a record-breaking $4.5m (£3.3m) for lifting the title.

For context, when the USGA last played the US Open at the Shinnecock Hills in 2018, the full payout was $12m (£9m) with the winner Brooks Koepka earning $2.16m (£1.6m) for his second consecutive title.
