A security analyst and counter-insurgency specialist, Dr. Appolos Kuchi, has urged the Plateau State government and local security agencies to take proactive steps to prevent an influx of terrorists into the region. This warning comes in light of the United States initiating airstrikes aimed at terrorist strongholds in Sokoto State.

With the US indicating plans to extend similar airstrikes to other states where terrorists and bandits are active, Dr. Kuchi is concerned that some of the fleeing terrorists may migrate to Plateau due to the state's porous borders if not addressed promptly.

In a telephone interview with DAILY POST on Sunday, the security expert expressed that terrorists may view Plateau as a soft target due to its accessibility, potentially leading to an influx into the state.

“It is well-known that Plateau State shares borders with several states, including Bauchi, Nasarawa, Taraba, Kaduna, and even the Federal Capital Territory (FCT),” Dr. Kuchi stated.

“The US airstrikes have instilled panic among the terrorists, and the most likely refuge for them would be Plateau State,” he emphasized.

The security analyst further mentioned that over the past two decades, Plateau State has been a focal point for violent attacks by bandits and terrorists, as they have consistently found it easy to infiltrate the area.

“Historically, their entry into the state has typically been through Bauchi and Nasarawa. However, given the current panic, they may resort to alternative routes such as Taraba and Kaduna to access Plateau,” he explained.

“Moreover, we must remember that this state has served as their playground for several years without adequate oversight, allowing them the opportunity to enter en masse,” he added.

“I am taking this opportunity to urge the state government and relevant security authorities to reinforce border security to prevent any attempts by terrorists to enter the state and engage in their criminal activities,” Dr. Kuchi advised.
