His first bronze came in the men’s 20km individual race, but he used his post-race interview to dramatically and globally confess his infidelity in a bid to win his ex-girlfriend back.

Laegreid claimed another bronze medal in the men’s biathlon 10km sprint event on Friday.

France’s Emilien Jacquelin, who finished just two-tenths of a second behind Lægreid in fourth, couldn’t help but dig at the Norwegian when interviewed after the race.

He told VG Sport ” “I was beaten by an unfaithful guy.”

He then joked: “I will f*** him on Sunday, we’ll see.”

Laegreid’s cheating declaration has spread like wildfire as he fought back the tears while he spoke.

“There’s someone I wanted to share this with who might not be watching today.

“Six months ago, I met the love of my life and the most beautiful and kindest person in the world. And three months ago I made my biggest mistake and cheated on her.

“I had a gold medal in my life. I only have eyes for her. I don’t know what I want to achieve by saying this. I wish I could share it with her.”

It doesn’t seem as though the plea to his ex-girlfriend has worked, sadly.

Speaking annoymously to Norwegian outlet VG , his ex-girlfriend said she “did not choose to be put in this position, and it hurts to have to be in it”.

She added Laegreid’s infidelity was “hard to forgive, even after a declaration of love in front of the whole world.”
