The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has rejected the allegations circulating that the ongoing expansion of the Ore-Ondo-Akure highway is being constructed with inferior materials and does not meet international standards.

While reassuring the public that there is no need for concern, Umahi stated that the construction of the 86.43-kilometer highway adheres to approved engineering designs and specifications, emphasizing that the structural integrity of the pavement remains intact.

A video recently went viral featuring a content creator raising concerns that wire mesh was being utilized in the construction instead of heavy iron rods.

The Minister expressed satisfaction with the progress made by the contractor responsible for the project, noting that once completed, the road will endure for over 50 years. He underscored that the federal government is dedicated to providing durable, safe, and cost-effective road infrastructure throughout Nigeria.

According to Umahi, who was represented by the Controller of Works in Ondo State, Olajide Hussein, while overseeing the Ajue corridor of the project in the Odigbo Local Council Area, the use of wire mesh is a recognized practice both nationally and internationally.

“We also viewed the viral video, and the individual raising concerns specifically mentioned the use of wire mesh on the outer shoulders, suggesting that the contractor should apply the same heavy reinforcement on the carriageway where we are standing, as well as on the outer shoulders,” he explained.

“The use of A142 wire mesh that you see on the outer shoulder is a standard practice globally. It is widely accepted in Nigeria and internationally.”

“We employ heavy reinforcement on the carriageway due to flexural stresses, while lighter wire meshes are used on the outer shoulders since they bear less load.”

“Therefore, if you examine all our single carriageway rigid road constructions across the nation, you will observe a similar design. This is not unique to the Ore-Ondo-Akure Road or to Ondo State,” Umahi stated.
