UK’s Starmer urges Iran to return to nuclear talks after US strikes

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has called on Iran to return to the negotiating table for nuclear talks, following the United States’ entry into the ongoing conflict and its targeted strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities earlier today.

Starmer, in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), stated the urgent need for diplomacy to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East and warned against further destabilization.

“Iran’s nuclear programme is a grave threat to international security. Iran can never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon and the US has taken action to alleviate that threat,”; the prime minister wrote.

“We call on Iran to return to the negotiating table and reach a diplomatic solution to end this crisis,”; he added.

Starmer’s remarks come after U.S. President Donald Trump announced that American forces had successfully bombed key nuclear sites in Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan, joining Israel’s week-long campaign to dismantle Tehran’s military and nuclear infrastructure.

The UK government has so far maintained a cautious stance, expressing support for allied efforts to prevent nuclear proliferation while urging restraint and diplomacy to avoid a wider regional war.

Downing Street sources say the UK continues to coordinate closely with the U.S., France, and Germany on potential pathways for renewed dialogue with Tehran.
