Jose Mourinho has dropped the biggest hint that he will become the next manager of Benfica.

The 62-year-old was sacked by Fenerbache only four weeks ago.

But he is now set for a return to the Portuguese club where he began his coaching career.

Benfica are looking for a new man in charge after they fired Bruno Lage on Tuesday night.

Lage was sacked after they lost 3-2 to Qarabag in the Champions League and the club has now moved quickly to begin negotiations with Mourinho.

“For Bruno, I have nothing but respect and the best for his career,” Mourinho said.

“He knows that my return to Portugal, which wasn’t planned, but that what was in my mind as a natural consequence for my career would be to return to Portugal one day to coach the national team.

“If this happens with Benfica… who is the coach who says no to Benfica? Not me.”
