Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola has hailed Benfica head coach, Jose Mourinho’s strategy following Benfica’s Champions League 4-2 win against Real Madrid on Wednesday.

Guardiola also admitted that he was left confused when Mourinho sent the Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin up during the win against Real Madrid.

Recall that Benfica was 3-2 up towards the closing stage of the match against the Spanish La Liga giants when they got a free kick.

Mourinho then sent Trubin upfront, and he scored to help his team win 4-2, clinching the final spot in the playoffs.

Speaking after the game, Guardiola said (via HaytersTV): “Yeah, of course. We were all there [in the dressing room]. We did not know that Benfica needed a goal to qualify.

“With the goalkeeper, we said, ‘Why do you go? Stay in the goal because Madrid can equalise!’ After that, we are out. But it was a good strategy for Jose [Mourinho], right? To score the fourth goal.”
