UCL: Arteta told to take Arsenal’s captain armband from Odegaard, give Rice

Published on May 02, 2025 at 06:10 PM

Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson has urged Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta to take the captain’s armband from Martin Ødegaard and hand it to Declan Rice.

According to Lawrenson, relieving Ødegaard of the captaincy would allow him to concentrate more on his own performances for Arteta’s side.

Speaking to Paddy Power (via Mirror), Lawrenson rated Ødegaard’s season a “six out of ten.”;

Lawrenson, commenting after Arsenal’s recent UEFA Champions League semi-final first-leg defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, said: “The captain’s armband should be taken away from Martin Odegaard, so he can get back to focusing on his performances.

“We all know that he’s a good player, but he’s just had a six out of 10 season.

“If you gave Declan Rice the armband instead, you imagine that it would not affect his performances, especially considering he was captain at West Ham.

“I’d give it to Rice so Odegaard can focus on improving his performances.”;

Ødegaard joined Arsenal from Real Madrid a few years ago.
