THE UK and US governments have agreed to work together to find a solution for the contentious military base on the Chagos Islands.

The facility was recently thrust into the spotlight when the UK government proposed to hand over the Indian Ocean territory to Mauritius.

The White House boss declared it was “act of total weakness,” claiming the site of vital significance was being given away “for no reason whatsoever”.

However, a statement from Downing Street said: ” The leaders agreed their governments would continue working closely to guarantee the future operation of the base.”
