Trump claims credit for Canadian new Prime Minister’s election victory

Published on May 07, 2025 at 04:39 AM

Trump boasted that he had played a role in the new leader’s success during last month’s election.

He made the remarks as he welcomed Carney to the White House on Tuesday, greeting him with a handshake ahead of an Oval Office session with the press.

Trump said: “I was probably the greatest thing that happened to him [Carney], but I can’t take full credit. His party was losing by a lot, and he ended up winning. So, I really want to congratulate him.

“It was probably one of the greatest comebacks in the history of politics, maybe even greater than mine, you know.”;

Trump added: “We were watching it with interest, and I think Canada chose a very talented person, a very good person, because we spoke before the election quite a few times. And it is an honour to have you at the White House and the Oval Office.”;
