The troops of Operation Hadin Kai have successfully thwarted a coordinated assault by the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) on a Forward Operating Base in Mairari, Borno State, resulting in the elimination of several terrorists.
The Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force North East, Lt Colonel Sani Uba, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Saturday.
He noted that the attackers attempted to breach the base using two Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (VBIEDs), but these devices were quickly detected and neutralized, preventing any breach of the base.
“Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have effectively repelled a coordinated attack by ISWAP terrorists on a Forward Operating Base in Mairari, delivering a significant setback to the group’s operational capabilities in the region,” the statement indicated.
The assault, which commenced late on December 12 and extended into the early hours of December 13, was successfully countered through coordinated ground and air operations,” the statement continued.
Lt Colonel Uba further stated that following the thwarted assault, OPHK troops from Sector 3, supported by the Theatre Command Quick Reaction Group, the Nigeria Police Crack Team, and the Civilian Joint Task Force, carried out a comprehensive operation in the vicinity.
“This operation led to the discovery of numerous terrorist casualties and the recovery of weapons, ammunition, and logistical supplies left behind during their retreat,” he explained.
Among the recovered items were AK-47 rifles, magazines and ammunition, PKT rounds, hand grenades, motorcycles, communication devices, combat gear, medical supplies, and various materials indicative of ongoing terrorist activities.
The two neutralized VBIEDs were destroyed by defensive fire, causing minor damage to two locations along the road, according to Lt Colonel Uba.
He stressed that there was no breach of the base, underscoring the readiness and vigilance of the troops.
The troops are conducting aggressive patrols in the region to deter further terrorist activities and reassure local communities of the ongoing security presence.
“The failed attack at Mairari highlights the operational readiness and professionalism of our men and women in uniform.
Operation Hadin Kai remains committed to protecting civilians, disrupting terrorist networks, and restoring peace throughout the region,” he concluded.
