Former Manchester United defender, Rio Ferdinand, has claimed the club already made a mistake by not signing PSV’s Cody Gakpo in the summer.
Gakpo has emerged as one of the stars at the 2022 World Cup, scoring in the first three games for the Netherlands.
United almost signed the 23-year-old in the summer, but dropped their interest and brought in Antony from Ajax.
Gakpo’s performances for his country have, however, put him firmly back on the radar of United and other Premier League clubs.
United boss, Erik ten Hag, is expected to be in the market for a forward, after the club terminated Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract.
But Ferdinand fears the Red Devils have already missed the boat.
“Man Utd’s next signing (Gakpo) who we probably could have had for £25m – £30m before the tournament who is now probably doubled.
“Manchester United are going to get bent over again to put it bluntly it’s just going to be.. the numbers that are going to be spoken about after this tournament are going to be… if he does nothing from this point on he’s doubled minimum in value, wages and the transfer fee.
“He’s got three goals in the World Cup. With Ronaldo leaving, wow. Man United need new owners now,” Ferdinand said on his VIBE podcast.
