The couple was swimming at dawn on Thursday off Kylies Beach at Crowdy Bay when a large bull shark attacked.
Emergency services were alerted around 6:30 AM, but Livia succumbed to her injuries on the sand before paramedics could reach her.
Livia, a healthy academic and former synchronized swimmer, was filming a pod of dolphins with a GoPro when the shark bit her multiple times, severing her left arm.
Her boyfriend, 26-year-old diving instructor Lukas Schindler, attempted to fend off the three-meter shark but was bitten twice on his leg.
Despite sustaining injuries, he managed to pull her more than 50 meters to the shore, where bystanders rushed to assist.
Police later reported that a passerby who fashioned a tourniquet to control Lukas’s bleeding likely saved his life.
NSW Ambulance superintendent Josh Smyth praised the backpacker’s actions as “heroic.”
Authorities are currently reviewing “harrowing footage” recorded by the couple just before the attack.
Livia and Lukas had arrived the night before and camped nearby.
Both had backgrounds in fitness, security, and international studies, working together as Security Operators at the World Economic Forum.
