Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has characterized the Tiv as one of Nigeria’s most recognizable ethnic groups, emphasizing their rich heritage, significant population, and contributions to national development.
Governor Alia made these remarks on Saturday, December 13, 2025, during the grand finale of the 2025 Tiv Day celebration held at the JS Tarka Stadium in Gboko, Benue State.
He noted that the Tiv Day celebration signifies a new chapter in the history of the Tiv people, highlighting that the event serves as a tribute to the sacrifices made by past leaders who fought for the identity, dignity, and freedom of the Tiv Nation.
The 2025 celebration, themed “The Rebirth of the Tiv Nation,” included cultural performances, reflections on the Tiv journey, the awarding of honorific chieftaincy titles, and renewed calls for peace, unity, and development throughout Tiv land.
Governor Alia encouraged Tiv sons and daughters to take pride in their identity, live harmoniously, and work together for the advancement of the Tiv Nation.
He expressed his appreciation for the honorific title of Asôrtar-u-Tiv bestowed upon him, describing a Tiv title as a significant honor that entails responsibility and a commitment to service.
He added that this recognition would further inspire him to enhance developmental initiatives across Benue State.
The governor also launched the Tiv–English Dictionary, referring to it as a significant milestone in the preservation and revival of the Tiv language and culture.
In his comments, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, CON, described Tiv Day as a celebration of identity, unity, and cultural pride.
He recalled that the celebration, established in 1977, was intended to promote unity among the Tiv people both at home and abroad.
