FIREFIGHTERS are tackling a massive inferno that has broken out at Belfast’s Titanic Quarter.
Crews have been dispatched to the scene of a blaze at a recycling centre in Northern Ireland’s capital.
Thick plumes of black smoke could be seen for miles rising above the Clearway industrial site in the Titanic Quarter in Belfast this afternoon.
Belfast Harbour Police and several fire crews are currently at the scene with at least two fire engines in attendance.
A firefighting boat is also assisting the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service in tackling the flames from the water’s edge.
It’s understood that the fire started at around 1.30pm.
People have been urged to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.
A spokesperson for the Police Service of Northern Ireland said: “Road-users in east Belfast are advised to avoid the East Twin Road area due to an ongoing fire in the vicinity this afternoon.
“Please seek an alternative route for your journey.”
East Belfast DUP MP Gavin Robinson has urged residents to “keep windows and doors closed as a precaution”.
In a social media post, he said: “A scrap metal recycling facility is currently on fire in the Harbour Estate. Belfast Harbour Police are currently assisting NIFRS and PSNI.
“Queens Road is closed to traffic.
“A large plume of smoke is affecting parts of Inner East Belfast, including Victoria Park.
“Belfast Harbour Police have asked that residents nearby to keep windows and doors closed as a precaution.
“Please avoid the immediate area and allow emergency services to carry out their work safely.”
