Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has alleged plans by security operatives to arrest his elder brother, Bashir, if he had stepped foot in Nigeria for their mother’s burial.

El-Rufai claimed that the plot was to arrest Bashir and get him to negotiate.

Speaking in a video, the chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, disclosed that Bashir had to miss their mother’s burial in a bid to evade arrest.

According to El-Rufai: “My elder brother Bashir El-Rufai couldn’t make it because we learned that there is a plan to arrest him because they believe if they get him, I will negotiate.”

DAILY POST reports that El-Rufai’s biological mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, died in Cairo, Egypt, on Friday and flown back to Abuja where she was buried on Sunday.

Her death came at a time when El-Rufai was arrested and detained by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, following allegations of corruption and money laundering.

The former governor was arraigned before a Federal High Court in Kaduna on March 24 on a 10-count charge, with the case adjourned until March 31, 2026, for hearing of pending applications, including his bail request.

He was, however, granted release from ICPC custody to attend his mother’s burial.
