The crowd, believed to be up to 100 people, were seen shouting and attempting to gain access to the homes in St John’s Way on Wednesday.

One was arrested on suspicion of inciting racial hatred.

The other was held on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and failing to provide details to police when asked.

And Norfolk County Councillor Scott Hussey claimed cops were yesterday dispersing crowds for “lobbing eggs” at migrant homes.

He posted videos on showing officers piling out of police vans and marching towards crowds of people in the area.

Norfolk Police’s Chief Constable Paul Sanford said asylum seekers had to be escorted from homes following the chaos.

He told the BBC’s Today programme: “We did have people protesting who were targeting addresses they believed were housing asylum seekers.

“On a couple of occasions, that required us to escort the residents of those properties away for their safety.”

“They would have created a significant problem, and really threatened the safety of the occupants, and indeed the protesters themselves.”

Police said dozens of protesters had attempted to force entry to a home by smashing a window, fence panel and letterbox on Wednesday.

Two officers were rushed to hospital after responding to the scene after one was hit by a rock, one bitten and another spat at.

Police described the protests as “fast-moving and volatile”, with tensions escalating as a crowd moved towards a residential property.

“I’ve had two police officers hospitalised as a result of the incident on Wednesday night.

“The people who perpetrated those offences should expect the full force of the law, and I will be pushing for the strongest possible sanction.”
