"Unexpected Move: 32-Year-Old Ex-Grand Slam Champion Joins Eighth-Tier Football Club"

A FORMER Grand Slam tennis champion has made a shock career change into football.

, 32, is a former world No3 player, who most famously triumphed at the 2020 US Open.

But the star put down his racket for good in 2024 after a steep decline in his results on the court.

Now he is back in action on the grass – but in an entirely different sport.

The tennis talent has reportedly joined amateur football side Badener AC.

The club play in the eighth-tier of Thiem’s native .

He registered with the Austrian FA on July 15th, per reports, making him eligible to feature for the outfit.

It is believed that the star had a friend playing for the team which initially opened up the door to his signature.

But club officials are said to have made it clear that the celebrity will have to earn his place in the team, and cannot rely on his status to get him minutes.

The news comes just days after he was announced as an ambassador for the upcoming Super Cup.

The clash between and will be held in Austria’s Red Bull Arena Salzburg on August 12th.

And Thiem excitedly announced his involvement with the promotion of the event on his social media, writing: “Football has always been an important part of my life, whether I’m playing myself, watching in the stadium or cheering as a fan.

“That’s why I’m even more excited to be part of the UEFA Super Cup 2026 as its official ambassador for Austria!

“Can’t wait for this one!”
