Abia State Governor Alex Otti has instructed the Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) and the Abia State Civil Service Commission to amend the promotion criteria for teachers who achieved a score of at least 60 percent in their promotion examinations and interviews.
He emphasized that the educational authorities are not permitted to raise the passing score above the 60 percent that was initially announced prior to the promotion examinations.
A concerned citizen of Abia, Chukwu Emeka Kalu, had urged Governor Otti to take action, alleging that ASUBEB increased the passing score for promotions from 60 percent to 75 percent, a change he claimed has caused considerable frustration among teachers.
During his monthly media discussion on Tuesday, Governor Otti addressed the situation, stating he had resolved the issue by instructing ASUBEB and the Abia State Civil Service Commission to revert to the original 60 percent passing score.
The governor, who noted that he issued this directive a few days before Christmas, assured the affected teachers that updates regarding their promotions would be communicated shortly, along with corresponding adjustments to their salaries.
He criticized the educational body for setting a passing score prior to the examinations being held.
“I have resolved the issue and have engaged with the civil service commission and ASUBEB to clarify that you cannot establish a passing score before an exam is conducted.
“Since it was previously advertised that the passing score is sixty, I have approved that they revert to this standard, and this decision was made a few days before Christmas,” Otti stated.
Otti also expressed his satisfaction that his administration has recently restored electricity to 33 communities in the Ukwa West Local Government Area after a nine-year absence, adding that efforts are underway to restore power to the Ohafia and Bende communities within the state.
