A CHEMISTRY teacher had sex with a schoolboy up to 30 times after comparing herself to a porn mag model, a court heard.

Sally-Anne Bowen is accused of abusing two boys at a North London school when they were aged 14 and 15 in the 1980s.

The teacher – then aged 25 – allegedly “engaged in flirtatious conduct” with the pupils and “engaged in sexual relationships with them both”.

Jurors heard Bowen had sex with the first boy between 20 and 30 times and he believed they were in a relationship.

She allegedly let the second boy touch her breasts and kiss her during lunch at a cafe near the school.

Prosecutor Madeleine Wolfe said: “The prosecution case is that when Ms Bowen worked at the school, that she engaged in flirtatious conduct towards these two boys and she encouraged and engaged in sexual relationships with them both and they were 14 to 15-years-old.

“The sexual abuse was notably worse to the first pupil who she engaged in acts of sexual intercourse. With the second pupil the abuse was limited to inappropriate kissing.

“The prosecution do not suggest Ms Bowen forced herself on either boy. Viewed superficially, these boys may have appeared willing to engage in flirtatious and sexual activity.

“But the prosecution remind you she was a teacher in a position of trust and authority. By flirting with them and engaging in sexual activity with them she exploited her position for her own sexual gratification.

“As these boys were exploited in that way, any apparent agreement on their part was not genuine consent to the sexual activity. She denied any form of sexual activity, whether that’s kissing or sexual intercourse with either.”

Harrow Crown Court was told Bowen, now aged 64, joined the school in her first job as a chemistry teacher in the 1980s.

She began speaking with the first boy even though he was not in her class and “made him feel special”, it was said.

Jurors heard the pair would spend lunchtime together chatting and sometimes got the school bus home together.

Ms Wolfe added: “As far as he was concerned, their relationship went to the point he thought she was his girlfriend – that he loved her and she loved him.”

Bowen would allegedly encourage the male pupils to “speak and joke openly about sex”.

The boy recalled on one occasion, he and some were flicking through a porn mag and Bowen took it off them.

Jurors heard he expected her to confiscate but she instead “pointed to an image of a naked woman” and said her “p***y” was similar to her own.

This led to the boy taking the bus home with her to Golders Green where they kissed in her flat, the court was told.

Ms Wolfe continued: “For the summer holidays of 1988 he was a regular visitor to that bedroom. He thought they had sex in excess of 20 to 30 times.

“He told he was never allowed to stay the night. He thought the latest he was allowed to stay was about one o’clock in the morning.”

The court heard the boy’s mum later became suspicious and called Bowen, who denied anything was happening.

In the summer of 1988, the boy was sent to stay with his sister in the north of England and she received “a number of calls” from a woman on the landline, it was said.

When the alleged relationship continued after the holidays, his mum called the school and was told Bowen was no longer working there with “no reason or explanation given”.

Bowen later told the boy she was leaving the UK to stay at a kibbutz in Israel, the court heard.

The boy first disclosed the alleged abuse – including details about the cafe lunches and sex – to a partner, who told him to go to police.

When Bowen was interviewed in 2015, she claimed he was a “bit of a nuisance” and “besotted” with her.

Jurors heard she described the sexual relationship claims as “just pure fantasy”.

As a result of the allegations, Bowen faced a Teaching Regulation Authority hearing in 2022.

The court heard the second pupil read about the TRA hearing online and came forward after encouragement from his wife and family.

He claimed he was “goaded” by other boys at the school into kissing “young and attractive” Bowen.

The pupil also remembered touching her breasts and putting his hand near her crotch – to which “she would not react negatively”, Ms Wolfe said.

Bowen denies eight counts of indecent assault.

The trial continues.
