A US official said Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) were behind the attack, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The vessel was left ablaze after being hit on its port side eight nautical miles east of Limah, Oman.
No casualties or environmental impact have been reported, UKMTO added.
Reports of the strike came just hours before US President Donald Trump departed for a high-stakes Nato summit in Ankara, Turkey.
