NYSC Civic Responsibility

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has urged corps members to view their service year as a civic duty and an opportunity for nation-building.

NYSC Orientation Address

During his address to corps members at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Ede, Osun State, General Nafiu encouraged the corps members to remain committed, dedicated, selfless, and disciplined as they embark on their service year to the nation.

He stated, “You are primarily responsible for building and contributing to the development of this nation and making it a better place. Since Nigeria is ours, we must serve it.”

The NYSC DG urged the corps members to ignore negative narratives circulating on social media about the country, reminding them of their role as educated citizens.

“Don’t pay attention to the negative chatter on social media suggesting that things are deteriorating. You are all graduates; think critically,” he said.

Social Media and Discipline

He emphasized that the NYSC orientation exercise aims to unite young Nigerians from various backgrounds to promote unity and mutual understanding.

“The purpose of the orientation exercise is to bring together youth under similar conditions to familiarize themselves with different cultures, people, and experiences across the country, in line with the NYSC's mission to unite the nation,” he said.

According to him, every Nigerian graduate participates in the NYSC to fulfill a national mandate, which serves as a call to service.

“It is a call to service and to nation-building. It helps to unlock your leadership potential. It is our responsibility as youth to build and lead this nation.”

He encouraged the corps members to take the initiative and learn about leadership, as it entails responsibility.

“Use social media responsibly. For this year, set aside any distractions. You are not politicians.”

“Discipline in the NYSC is not just enforced. Be obedient and adhere to the NYSC bylaws. Do not travel without permission and avoid traveling at night. Take your personal security seriously. It saddens the NYSC to hear reports of unfortunate incidents involving our corps members. Know your rights, privileges, and limitations,” he added.

Inclusiveness in Nigeria

Brigadier General Nafiu praised the inclusiveness of Nigerian society, assuring corps members that they would be welcomed with hospitality across states.

“The beauty of Nigeria is that you will be welcomed everywhere. After the NYSC service year, it often took the intervention of some parents to bring their children back home. It is an enjoyable experience,” he added.

He encouraged the corps members to feel at home in Osun State and to make significant contributions during their service.

“This is where you should be right now. Contribute your part and leave a lasting legacy,” he urged.

Skills Acquisition Program

Highlighting the importance of the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) program, he urged corps members to take this initiative seriously.

The DG warned corps members not to perceive the SAED activities as a waste of time.

“The essence of the NYSC SAED program is to provide you with two skills at the price of one. It equips you with valuable skills by the end of your service year,” he explained.

“Do not view SAED as time-wasting activities. You will find it useful. Reality is what you face now. There is a significant difference between promises and reality. Don’t shortchange yourself by completing one year with only your certificate of national service.”

He encouraged them to acquire skills, even if they do not plan to use them right away, and advised corps members to embrace financial literacy and develop a saving culture.

“Acquire skills even if you don’t need them immediately. NYSC has partnered with several organizations to assist corps members in skill acquisition.”

“Be financially literate because the scheme cannot meet the needs of all corps members after service. These are days of small beginnings. Do not underestimate them,” he added.

Osun NYSC Coordinator's Address

In his welcoming remarks, the Osun NYSC Coordinator, Agbor Ndoma Obim, expressed his pleasure at the visit of the NYSC DG and assured him of the corps members' commitment to serving Nigeria diligently.

Obim reported that a total of 2,500 corps members were registered in the camp, consisting of 830 males and 807 females assigned to Osun State, along with 427 males and 436 females dispatched to Lagos State.

He added that camp activities had begun in full swing, with the camp clinic opening two days before the official start of the orientation course.

The Coordinator reaffirmed the corps members' commitment to the ideals of the NYSC and emphasized their readiness to contribute to national development through the mandatory one-year service.
