Lowry spent nine seasons with the Raptors and his departure was widely rumoured in the lead-up to the NBA free agency period.
In a post shared on Twitter and Instagram Monday evening, Lowry posted a brief message acknowledging the signing.
&#8220;Miami Heat x Kyle Lowry. Let&#8217;s goo!! (sic)&#8221; the caption said.

After making <a href="https://globalnews.ca/tag/toronto-raptors" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Toronto Raptors</a> history by becoming the first Canadian to be selected by the team as part of a <a href="https://globalnews.ca/tag/nba-draft" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">NBA draft</a>, <a href="https://globalnews.ca/tag/dalano-banton" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Dalano Banton</a> is reflecting on how his upbringing in Rexdale has shaped himself and his career as he prepares to join the squad.
&#8220;I feel like just having the image of Canada or Toronto or wherever, has this only this one side of it where everyone is super nice, but not understanding that there [are] real neighbourhoods where you have to come out and put on like a tough face or you have to come out every day and pursue stuff or portray the way you&#8217;re not just to show that you&#8217;re not weak,&#8221; Banton told reporters on Sunday during his first news conference since joining the team.
&#8220;I had to come outside every day and show that I&#8217;m a strong man and be a young man at a very early age and make some real decisions for yourself, so I feel like a lot of people don&#8217;t understand that coming from Canada a lot of people just think it&#8217;s Canada you know like it&#8217;s very nice over there and everyone&#8217;s so nice, but it&#8217;s not always like that.

&#8220;I feel like growing up in Rexdale gives you that extra push, that extra grit, just knowing that I had a different upbringing. I went through a lot of things, it was a lot of trials and a lot of tribulations coming out of there.&#8221;
Banton, the six-foot-nine and 204-pound guard who was selected 46th in the draft on Thursday, grew up near the intersection of Kipling Avenue and Mount Olive Drive and beamed with pride while discussing his neighbourhood.
&#8220;Growing up in Rexdale, just the kids being able to see me. I go to the gyms that they went to all these years and I know a lot of people. Everybody knows it&#8217;s like a tight-knit family growing up where I&#8217;m from,&#8221; he said.
&#8220;It&#8217;s not about where you are, it&#8217;s where you plan to be &#8230; plan to live bigger.

&#8220;Coming where I come from, it gives a lot of people hope. I feel like a lot of people think they can make it now.&#8221;
Banton credited his earlier development in basketball and athletics to the Rexdale Community Hub (noting it was literally across the street from where he grew up) and the North Kipling Community Centre, saying he often did runs and drills at both facilities. The community has a few of the <a href="https://www.toronto.ca/city-government/data-research-maps/neighbourhoods-communities/nia-profiles/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">City of Toronto&#8217;s 31 designated priority neighbourhood improvement areas</a>.
&#8220;They get you into gym, they make sure you do your schoolwork &#8230; I just took advantage of those community centres, keeping myself from outside of the neighbourhood,&#8221; he said.
<blockquote>&#8220;I feel like it was the blessing for me having those community centres to keep me in the gym.&#8221;</blockquote>
During his sophomore season with the Nebraska Cornhuskers during the last season, he averaged 9.6 points, 3.9 assists and 5.9 rebounds over 27 games. He was previously at Western Kentucky.
However, during his time with the Huskers, Banton said he wanted to find a way to pay homage to his Rexdale roots. A former rider of the TTC&#8217;s 45 Kipling bus, which went right past his neighbourhood, he picked 45 for his jersey.
&#8220;When I was trying to think of a number that means something to me, I was kind of getting tired of just wearing numbers. I feel like you can always make meaning of something, so I felt like once that clicked to me it stuck,&#8221; he recalled.
&#8220;Everyone who knows me knows I&#8217;m a guy who takes where I&#8217;m from with me, with pride.&#8221;

In addition to the pride for his home community, Banton discussed his admiration and appreciation for the Raptors noting he&#8217;s long been a fan since the Chris Bosh era.
&#8220;It was my favourite team. It was the only team that I ever kept up within the NBA constantly &#8230; I used to come to the games and just knowing that I can be a part of that now, people can come watch me play like how we used to come watch everyone else, it&#8217;s great,&#8221; he said.
&#8220;It was a dream come true just knowing that all the hard work you put in, everyone in the draft wanting to hear their name called and just being blessed with that opportunity &#8212; and it being to the Raptors &#8212; I feel like just both of my dreams coming true at once.
<blockquote>&#8220;It&#8217;s kind of surreal to me still, but I&#8217;m just grateful for the opportunity. I&#8217;m thankful for it and I thank everyone multiple times a day.&#8221;</blockquote>
However, Banton acknowledged getting to where he is hasn&#8217;t been easy. He said for basketball players at the high school level looking to get exposure is harder in Canada, noting select schools have stronger recognition in terms of the sports community versus the United States where there is a more universal audience.
&#8220;You can be as good as you want sometimes, but it&#8217;s just not enough. It&#8217;s not on the kids, it&#8217;s just the level of exposure,&#8221; he said, noting social media is starting to change the prospects for aspiring athletes.
&#8220;I feel like you have to bet on yourself and believe in yourself because if you don&#8217;t, no one is going to do it for you. I learned that at an early age.&#8221;
Meanwhile, as Banton prepares for playing in the summer league, he said he is looking forward to the evolution of his skills in the coming years and hoped he&#8217;ll be able to thrive under the Raptors&#8217; staff.

&#8220;I might not make an instant impact today, but I feel like for years to come and just trusting in the work and trusting in the development of the Raptors, and knowing their track record of how good they are getting guys better and getting guys contracts &#8230; I know the sky is the limit for me,&#8221; he said.
However, for now, he said he&#8217;s looking forward to reconnecting with those who have shown their support for him.
&#8220;I&#8217;ve just been soaking up the time with my family &#8230; everybody is just so happy for me, so I want to see everyone who is happy for me,&#8221; he said, adding he&#8217;s thinking of ways he can give back to the Mount Olive neighbourhood and the Rexdale community.
&#8220;It&#8217;s going to be great.&#8221;

Dalano Banton reflects on how Rexdale upbringing shaped his career as he joins Toronto Raptors

Giannis Antetokounmpo returned home to Athens bearing the NBA trophy on Sunday saying he was still &#8220;thirsty for victory&#8221;.
&#8220;It&#8217;s an addictive feeling to be a champion and we want to experience it again,&#8221; Giannis, who was accompanied by his brother and Milwaukee Bucks teammate Thanasis, said at a short press conference at Athens airport.
Their triumph sparked joy and pride of Greek fans, media and political leaders.
Giannis said he was &#8220;happy to bring the cup home&#8221; and promised to take the trophies to the working-class neighbourhoods of Sepolia and Zografou, where he grew up.
The son of Nigerian immigrants who arrived in Greece in 1991, Giannis was born and raised in poverty in Sepolia, a poor suburb of Athens.
&#8220;All our lives we saw our parents working, they never stopped. We also strive to become better and better, we work hard to do that,&#8221; he said, looking at his brother.

Giannis Antetokounmpo became a father in 2020 and his partner Mariah Riddlesprigger is expecting their second child.
He said that while he wanted to &#8220;relive those incredible moments&#8221; of victory, he added that &#8220;the most emotional moment of my life was when I became a father&#8221;.

Antetokounmpo takes NBA trophy home to Greece

Scottie Barnes believes he can be one of the best players in the NBA — and he&#8217;s planning to become that icon by working hard for the Toronto Raptors.
The Raptors selected Barnes, a 19-year-old Florida State forward, with the No. 4 pick in the draft Thursday.
Barnes said he had great meetings with Toronto heading into the draft, but didn&#8217;t get a sense the team would choose him.
&#8220;Once they called my name, it was really just a huge rush of excitement,&#8221; he told reporters on a video call. &#8220;When I went on my workout day, I really had a good workout, being able to talk to people on their staff, really develop a relationship.&#8221;
The six-foot-nine, 225-pound native of West Palm Beach, Fla., averaged 10.3 points and 4.1 assists for the Seminoles last season and was named the Atlantic Coast Conference freshman of the year.
He was a defensive force, with 35 steals and 11 blocks in 24 games.
&#8220;I don&#8217;t back down for nobody. It&#8217;s about how tough you are, what you&#8217;re willing to do. I&#8217;m willing to do those things,&#8221; said Barnes, clad in a brand-new red Raptors had, a white turtle neck and a shimmering white brocade suit. &#8220;I&#8217;m pretty tough on the floor, I have a grit when I&#8217;m on the floor. I don&#8217;t get bullied.&#8221;
Toronto&#8217;s latest addition does have room for improvement, though, after going 11 for 40 on three-point shots and shooting 62 per cent from the line last season.

Barnes feels his shooting has improved &#8220;tremendously&#8221; since the college campaign wrapped, but said he&#8217;s willing to keep working on it as he transitions into the NBA.
&#8220;If they feel like they need to fix something in it, I&#8217;m willing to work with them to try to fix whatever it needs,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I&#8217;m willing to do whatever it takes to try to be the best player I can be, being that great player, being at the top of the league, being able to just come in day in and day out knowing that I&#8217;m the best player on the floor.
&#8220;I&#8217;m trying to achieve greatness.&#8221;
Raptors head coach Nick Nurse thinks Barnes has the makings of a special player, especially if he continues to grind.
&#8220;He reminds me of two guys we already have — OG (Anunoby) and Pascal (Siakam),&#8221; Nurse said. &#8220;And if he can adopt the work ethic that they&#8217;ve done to become as good as they&#8217;ve become, then he&#8217;ll have a chance to do similar things, I think.&#8221;
The coach envisions a lineup that includes all three athletes on the floor at once, instantly making the team tougher to play against.
&#8220;We like guys that can handle, pass, score, defend, rebound a little bit and just kind of come at you in waves with that,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And I think that gives us a chance to do that with the three guys.&#8221;
Still, there are sure to be growing pains as Barnes adjusts to the league, Nurse cautioned.
&#8220;I guarantee he&#8217;s probably going to have some &#8216;Wow!&#8217; moments, he&#8217;s probably going to have some &#8216;Oh my gosh&#8217; moments. And then hopefully some more &#8216;Wow!&#8217; moments,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It&#8217;ll be up and down, like it is for most young players.&#8221;
The Detroit Pistons selected Oklahoma State guard Cade Cunningham with the first pick Thursday, while the Houston Rockets chose Jalen Green of the NBA G League Ignite second and the Cleveland Cavaliers took USC centre Evan Mobley third overall.
Some were surprised when NBA commissioner Adam Silver announced from the stage of the Barclay Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., that Barnes was the Raptors&#8217; selection with the fourth-overall pick.
There were a lot of good players on the board at the time, Nurse said.
&#8220;There was a lot of work, discussion, thoughts about which player would be the best for us,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And we just felt the combination of the size, length, two-way player, possible potential down the road fit all those things. I think he just kind of nosed out some guys.&#8221;
While Barnes has never been to Canada, he said he did visit the Raptors Toronto-themed experience room in Tampa Bay, Fla., on his workout day.
&#8220;It just showed me different things about the city. It&#8217;s a really nice city. It&#8217;s beautiful,&#8221; he said, noting that his dad is Jamaican and they had lots of family in Canada. &#8220;I really like the city, I really want to go see it for myself in person.&#8221;
Barnes marks Toronto&#8217;s highest selection since 2006 when the Raptors chose Andrea Bargnani with the No. 1 pick.
The Raptors also hold the 46th and 47th picks in this year&#8217;s draft.

The Toronto Raptors selected Florida State forward Scottie Barnes with the fourth-overall pick in the NBA draft Thursday.

Giannis Antetokounmpo delivered a historic 50-point performance when it mattered most in leading the Milwaukee Bucks to their first NBA title since 1971 by defeating the Phoenix Suns 105-98 on Tuesday.
The Bucks captured the best-of-seven NBA Finals by four games to two, becoming only the fifth team to claim the crown after dropping the first two contests.
Antetokounmpo, only the seventh player in finals history with a 50-point game, made 17-of-19 free throws while adding 14 rebounds and five blocked shots as the Bucks went a NBA-best 10-1 at home in the playoffs to end a half-century title drought.

Relentless Antetokounmpo scored 12 of his 20 third-quarter points in a 16-8 Bucks run that gave Milwaukee a 58-55 lead only 4:34 into the second half.

Antetokounmpo scored eight for the Bucks in a 10-6 Milwaukee run for a 94-88 lead midway into the fourth quarter and time and again he would drive to the basket when the Suns cut into the Bucks&#8217; lead.

The Owerri branch of the Nigerian Bar Association has frowned at the way people impersonate lawyers in the state.
The chairman of the Anti-Impersonation Committee of the branch, Ihediohanma Akponye, who spoke when his committee visited the state commissioner of police, Abutu Yaro, said that fake lawyers were causing huge economic loss to the state.
The Senior lawyer said that NBA was unhappy at the spate of fraud ravaging the state.
He said, &#8220;We have observed that Imo State is now riddled with fraud caused by persons that impersonate as lawyers. This is very disturbing to the Bar and as a Committee, we are committed to ensuring that impersonators face the wrath of the law.
&#8220;The Anti impersonation committee of the NBA is determined to identify and flush out fake lawyers and unscrupulous elements who illegally engage and carry on some businesses that are the exclusive preserves of members of the legal profession thereby hurting the trust of the public and the economy of the state.&#8221;
He commended the police in the state for recently arresting a fake lawyer, adding that more persons who impersonate the profession should be arrested and prosecuted.
Akponye said, &#8220;It is important we say this that only those called to the Nigerian Bar are legally qualified to practice as lawyers in Nigeria. Even if you are a graduate, as long as you are not called to bar you can&#8217;t practice as a lawyer. Mark Eaton, the 7-foot-4 shot-blocking king who twice was the NBA’s defensive player of the year during a career spent entirely with the Utah Jazz, has died. He was 64.
The team announced his death Saturday.
Eaton left his home for a bike ride Friday night in Summit County, Utah, and shortly thereafter someone called 911 to report after seeing him lying on a roadway and unconscious. Eaton was taken to a hospital where he later died.

The team, citing county officials who investigated, said “there is no reason to believe a vehicle was involved in the incident.”
The Jazz described him in a statement as an “enduring figure in our franchise history” who had a “significant impact in the community after his basketball career.”
Utah coach Quin Snyder said Saturday night before Game 3 in Memphis that the team’s thoughts and prayers go out to Eaton’s wife.

The center led the league in blocks per game four times and his average of 5.6 per contest in 1984-85 remains the highest average since the NBA started officially tracking that statistic.
Eaton’s career blocks average of 3.51 per game is the best in NBA history, and his career happened almost by accident. He was working as an auto mechanic in 1977 when a community college basketball coach persuaded him to enroll. From there, he went to UCLA, and his stint with the Jazz followed.
“I had an unusual background,” Eaton said for a story published on the Jazz web site two years ago. “It’s an unlikely story to be sure. I basically came into the NBA with two years of junior college experience and sat on the bench at UCLA for two years. And Frank Layden gave me a chance and the team was in a space where they could afford to let me make some mistakes out there and get my feet underneath me. It worked out well for both of us.”

Eaton had been, among other things, a restaurateur and motivational speaker in his retirement. In recent years, he served as a mentor to Utah center Rudy Gobert — the only other player in Jazz history to win the defensive player of the year award.
“He was so impressive,” longtime NBA broadcaster Mike Inglis, now the radio voice of the Miami Heat, said Saturday. “I used to call him the human condominium complex. He was something else on defense, let me tell you.”
Eaton’s death came days after he was in Chicago to be part of the celebration for his friend Joe West, who broke baseball’s umpiring record by working his 5,376th regular-season game Tuesday night.
His 11 playing seasons with the Jazz are third most in team history, behind longtime Utah cornerstones Karl Malone and John Stockton. His durability was noteworthy, with him once appearing in 338 consecutive games. He finished with career averages of 6.0 points and 7.9 rebounds.

But his best skill was defending the rim, and once told a story about how Wilt Chamberlain offered him advice about his career. He incorporate the tale into a motivational speech, telling others that Rule No. 1 for success is to “know your job.”
“Wilt grabbed me by the arm, took me out on the floor, positioned me right in front of the basket. He said, ‘You see this basket? Your job is to stop players from getting there. Your job is to make them miss their shot, get the rebound, throw it up to the guard, let them go down the other end and score and your job is to cruise up to half-court and see what’s going on,’” Eaton said.
“When Wilt shared that with me, everything changed. I understood what I needed to do,” Eaton said. “I understood what I could be great at. Wilt showed me what my job was and how doing what I did would benefit my team.”
Eaton also served as an officer in the National Basketball Players Association, and the union released a statement Saturday saying he would be missed.
“It may be cliched, but it’s true: Mark Eaton was a giant, in every sense of the word,” the NBPA statement said. “A long-time member of the NBPA Executive Committee right through his retirement from the league in 1994, Mark served his colleagues with grace and strength, and continued to watch over them through his service for the Retired Players Association. His imposing physical presence made a delightful match with his warm and thoughtful manner.”

Eaton’s No. 53 was one of the first jerseys retired by the Jazz. He was the defensive player of the year in 1984-85 and 1988-89, was a five-time All-Defensive team selection — three first-team nods, two second-team picks — and was an All-Star in 1989.
He was taken with the 107th overall pick by Phoenix in the 1979 draft, then drafted again at No. 72 overall by Utah in 1982. And he never left; his last game was in 1993, but back problems ended his career and he retired in September 1994.
“It has been a great ride, but life does have a way of moving on and I must move on with it,” Eaton wrote in a column for The Salt Lake Tribune in which he announced his retirement. “Thank you for letting me be a part of your life and community. I’ll be around.”
True to his word, Eaton remained a Utah mainstay for the rest of his life.
