He told the public gathered in St. Peter&#8217;s Square for his customary Sunday noon remarks that he was joining his voice to that of the Asian nation&#8217;s bishops in also calling for humanitarian corridors.

Echoing the bishops, Francis also insisted that &#8220;churches, pagodas, monasteries, mosques, temples, just as schools and hospitals, be respected as neutral places of refuge.&#8221;
The pope then prayed for peace in Myanmar before noting that Sunday was World Refugee Day, an initiative promoted by the United Nations.
&#8220;Let&#8217;s open our heart to refugees,&#8221; the pope said. &#8221;Let make ours their sadness and their joys, let&#8217;s learn from their courageous resilience,&#8221; Francis said.
That way, he said, &#8220;all together, we will grow a more human community, one big family.&#8221;

<a href="http://globalnews.ca/tag/Myanmar" target="_blank">Myanmar&#8217;s</a> military junta will begin presenting its case against deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi in court next Monday, her lawyers said.
The military arrested Suu Kyi in February when it overthrew her elected government. Public resistance to the coup remains strong and in recent months has taken the form of a low-level armed insurrection.
Government prosecutors will have until June 28 to finish their presentation in the court in Naypyitaw, the capital, where she is being tried on five charges, after which Suu Kyi&#8217;s defense team will have until July 26 to present its case, said Khin Maung Zaw, the team&#8217;s senior member.

Court sessions are to be held on Monday and Tuesday each week.
Khin Maung Zaw spoke to journalists after a procedural hearing on Monday for Suu Kyi and two fellow defendants, ousted President Win Myint and former Naypyitaw Mayor Myo Aung.
Suu Kyi&#8217;s supporters say the charges against her are politically motivated and are meant to discredit her and legitimize the military&#8217;s takeover. If convicted of any of the offenses, she could be banned from running in an election promised by the junta within one or two years of its takeover.
She and her two co-defendants are charged with spreading information that could cause public alarm or unrest.

Suu Kyi also faces two counts of violating the Natural Disaster Management Law for allegedly breaking COVID-19 pandemic restrictions during the 2020 election campaign; illegally importing walkie-talkies that were for her bodyguards&#8217; use; and unlicensed use of the radios.
A sixth charge that Suu Kyi faces is the most serious one: breaching the colonial-era Official Secrets Act, which carries a penalty of up to 14 years&#8217; imprisonment. It has been handled separately from the other charges and was filed in a court in Yangon, the country&#8217;s biggest city. It was recently transferred to the Union Supreme Court in Naypyitaw, said San Mar La Nyunt, another of her lawyers.
Another of her lawyers, Min Min Soe, said that when they met with her, she asked them if they could help pay for her food expenses because her cash resources were low and she did not want to rely on being fed by her captors.

Government prosecutors will have until June 28 to finish their arguments on five charges she faces, after which Suu Kyi’s defense team will have until July 26 to present its case.

Myanmar junta to present case against deposed leader Suu Kyi starting next week

Detained Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi said her ousted party would &#8220;exist as long as the people exist&#8221; during her first in-person court appearance since a February coup, her lawyer told AFP Monday.
Since the February 1 putsch, Myanmar has been in uproar with near-daily protests and a nationwide civil disobedience movement, with more than 800 killed by the military, according to a local monitoring group.
&#8220;We met with Amay Suu for 30 minutes,&#8221; lawyer Min Min Soe told AFP.
&#8220;There wasn&#8217;t much time to talk within 30 minutes, but she sounded healthy and fully confident.&#8221;
&#8220;She wishes her people to stay healthy and affirmed the NLD (National League for Democracy) will exist as long as people exist, because it was founded for the people,&#8221; Min Min Soe added.
Nobel laureate Suu Kyi has been hit with a string of criminal charges including flouting coronavirus restrictions during last year&#8217;s election campaign and possessing unlicensed walkie-talkies.
Myanmar&#8217;s junta has also threatened to dissolve her National League for Democracy political party, which swept elections in 2020, over alleged voter fraud.

She had not been seen in public since she was placed under house arrest by the junta, with weeks of delays to her legal case and her lawyers struggling to gain access to their client.
There was a heavy security presence in the capital Naypyidaw, an AFP correspondent said, with the road to the specially-constructed courthouse blocked off by trucks of police.

A strong, shallow <a href="http://globalnews.ca/tag/earthquake" target="_blank">earthquake</a> shook southwestern <a href="http://globalnews.ca/tag/China" target="_blank">China</a> near the border with Myanmar, killing at least three people and injuring more than two dozen as authorities rushed relief goods including tents to the area.
A second, 7.3-magnitude quake hit early Saturday the southern part of Qinghai province in central China, about 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) north of the first quake.
While there were no reports of casualties, roads were damaged in Maduo county. Aftershocks continued into Saturday morning, with multiple smaller temblors recorded by China&#8217;s earthquake administration.

U.S. Geological Survey geophysicist Jonathan Tytell said the two quakes were not related.
The Yunnan province seismological bureau gave the magnitude of the Friday night quake as 6.4 and said it struck 8 kilometers (5 miles) below the surface northwest of the city of Dali.
Shallow quakes often cause more damage, especially in populated areas.
The earthquake caused strong shaking around Dali, but Chinese news reports showed relatively little damage.

Relief efforts were underway, with the provincial authorities sending emergency rations and tents to the affected areas.

More than 800 people have been killed by <a href="http://globalnews.ca/tag/Myanmar">Myanmar&#8217;s</a> security forces since a wave of protests broke out across the country after the military seized power in a coup in February, an activist group said.
Myanmar has been in turmoil since the army ousted Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi&#8217;s elected government and detained her and officials of her National League for Democracy party.
The military has responded to protests by pro-democracy supporters in cities and towns with lethal force, while there has been an upsurge in fighting between the army and ethnic rebels in border areas and newly formed militia forces.

As of Monday, 802 people had been killed in the junta&#8217;s crackdown on its opponents, according to the activist group the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners.
&#8220;This is the number verified by AAPP, the actual number of fatalities is likely much higher,&#8221; the group said in its daily briefing.
It detailed six additional fatalities including in towns in Chin state and in districts of the main cities of Mandalay and Yangon.
Reuters could not independently verify the casualties and a military spokesman did not answer a phone call seeking comment.

The junta has previously disputed the number of civilians that have died and said dozens of members of the security forces had also been killed during the protests.
The activist group said 4,120 people were currently being detained, including 20 who had been sentenced to death.
<h2>Residents flee</h2>
Some of the most intense fighting since the Feb. 1 coup has emerged in recent days in Mindat, about 100 km (60 miles) from the Indian border in Chin state as the army battles local militias.
Thousands of residents in the hill town in northwest Myanmar were hiding in jungles, villages and valleys on Monday after fleeing an assault by the military, witnesses said.

Martial law was declared in Mindat last week before the army launched its assault, using artillery and helicopters against a newly formed Chinland Defence Force. The militia, armed mainly with hunting rifles, said it had pulled back to spare civilians from being caught in the crossfire.
Several residents reached by Reuters said food was in short supply and estimated as many as 5,000 to 8,000 people had fled the town. Roads were blocked and the presence of troops in the streets was preventing their return.
&#8220;Almost everyone left the city,&#8221; said a volunteer fighter who said she was in a jungle. &#8220;Most of them are in hiding.&#8221;
The United States and Britain have called on the army to avoid civilian casualties and a shadow National Unity Government formed by loyalists of Suu Kyi appealed for international help.

A U.N. General Assembly vote on Tuesday on a draft resolution calling &#8220;for an immediate suspension of the direct and indirect supply, sale or transfer of all weapons and munitions&#8221; to Myanmar has been postponed, diplomats said.
It was not immediately known when a vote would be rescheduled. Some diplomats said it had been delayed in a bid to win more support.
The draft resolution calls on the Myanmar military to end a state of emergency, stop all violence against peaceful protesters and respect the will of the people as expressed in the results of November&#8217;s election.

Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom on Monday imposed new sanctions targeting <a href="http://globalnews.ca/tag/myanmar">Myanmar&#8217;s</a> junta, increasing pressure on the military in the latest in a series of punitive actions since it took power in a Feb. 1 coup.
The United States targeted the governing State Administrative Council (SAC) and 13 officials, the move freezing any U.S. assets of those listed and generally bars Americans from dealing with them.
Canada said it imposed additional sanctions on individuals and entities tied to the Myanmar armed forces, while Britain announced sanctions against state-owned enterprise Myanmar Gems Enterprise which was included in previous U.S. sanctions.

The Southeast Asian country, also known as Burma, has been in crisis since the military seized power from Aung San Suu Kyi&#8217;s elected government, with near daily protests and a crackdown by the junta in which hundreds of people have been killed.
Western nations have led condemnation of the junta and applied limited sanctions. The junta&#8217;s allegations of irregularities in an election won by Suu Kyi&#8217;s party in November were rejected by the electoral commission.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the junta had made no attempt to restore Myanmar&#8217;s path to democracy, and called on all countries to consider measures such as arms embargoes and ending commercial cooperation with military-owned entities.
He also urged the military to immediately cooperate with the United Nations and Members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to implement a five-point plan reached by consensus last month, which includes an end to violence and dialog between the military and its opponents.

&#8220;Our actions today underscore our resolve and that of our partners to apply political and financial pressure on the regime as long as it fails to stop violence and take meaningful action to respect the will of the people,&#8221; Blinken said in a statement.
The U.S. Treasury Department in a statement accused the SAC, formed a day after the coup, of being created by Myanmar&#8217;s military to support it&#8217;s &#8220;unlawful overthrow of the democratically elected civilian government.&#8221;
The U.S. sanctions list included four members of the SAC and nine other officials the Treasury said were key members of Myanmar&#8217;s military government, including the governor of the central bank and the chairman of the military-appointed electoral body, the Union Election Commission.
The move appeared to be the first time Washington has targeted civilian officials who are working with the junta, although some of them are retired military officers.

Protesters against military rule marched in <a href="http://globalnews.ca/tag/Myanmar" target="_blank">Myanmar</a> on Saturday three months after a coup ended a democratic transition, with several small blasts compounding a sense of crisis that a U.N. envoy warned could bring state administration to a halt.
The military has tried to end dissent and impose its authority on a people largely opposed to the return of rule by the generals after 10 years of democratic reforms that included a government led by democracy champion Aung San Suu Kyi.
Despite a relentless crackdown in which at least 759 protesters have been killed, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) advocacy group, crowds come out day after day to reject the junta.
&#8220;Our cause, democracy, our cause, a federal union. Free arrested leaders,&#8221; protesters chanted at one of two rallies in the main city of Yangon.

Suu Kyi, 75, has been detained since the coup the along with many other members of her party. The AAPP says more than 3,400 people have been detained for opposing the military.
People also rallied in the second city of Mandalay and the southern town of Dawei, media reported.
There were no immediate reports of violence.
Media reported several small blasts in different places including Yangon late on Friday and on Saturday. There were no immediate reports of casualties and no claims of responsibility.
A spokesman for the junta did not answer calls seeking comment. The military has accused pro-democracy activists of planting bombs.

The U.N. special envoy on Myanmar told the Security Council on Friday that in the absence of a collective international response to the coup, violence was worsening and the running of the state risked coming to a standstill, according to diplomats who attended the private meeting.
Christine Schraner Burgener briefed the 15-member council from Thailand, where she has been meeting regional leaders. She hopes to travel to Myanmar but the military has yet to approve a visit.
&#8220;The general administration of the state could risk coming to a standstill as the pro-democracy movement continues in spite of the ongoing use of lethal force, arbitrary arrests and torture as part of the military&#8217;s repression,&#8221; Schraner Burgener said, according to diplomats.
She told diplomats that reports of a continuing crackdown risked undermining momentum toward ending the crisis following a meeting of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on April 25 with the junta leader, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.
Schraner Burgener, expressing concern about rising violence, cited reports of bomb attacks and of civilians, mostly students from the urban areas, getting weapons training from ethnic minority insurgents.

U.N. special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, Tom Andrews, said Min Aung Hlaing had used the summit as a &#8220;propaganda ploy.&#8221;
&#8220;Indeed, he tried to appear to be what he is not &#8211; a legitimate leader,&#8221; Andrews said in a post on Twitter.
&#8220;The good news: Those who ARE legitimate are ready to engage: the National Unity Government.&#8221;
Ousted members of parliament from Suu Kyi&#8217;s party, politicians representing ethnic minorities and democracy activists set up the unity government but it has yet to win the international recognition it says it is due.
The U.N. Security Council reiterated its &#8220;deep concern&#8221; at the situation and its support for Myanmar&#8217;s democratic transition. The council has issued several statements since the coup but diplomats say Russia and China are likely to prevent any stronger council action against Myanmar.

<a href="http://globalnews.ca/tag/Myanmar" target="_blank">Myanmar&#8217;s</a> pro-democracy unity government, which includes members of parliament ousted by the military coup, has told Southeast Asia&#8217;s regional bloc that it will not engage in talks until the junta releases all political prisoners.
The 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has been trying to find a path for Myanmar out of a bloody crisis triggered by the Feb. 1 coup and has called for an end to violence and talks between all sides.
But the junta has already declined to accept proposals to resolve the crisis that emerged from an ASEAN summit last weekend that was attended by Myanmar&#8217;s Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, but no-one from the civilian side.

The pro-democracy National Unity Government (NUG), formed this month by opponents of the military, said ASEAN should be engaging with it as the legitimate representative of the people.
&#8220;Before any constructive dialogue can take place, however, there must be an unconditional release of political prisoners including President U Win Myint and State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi,&#8221; the NUG prime minister, Minister Mahn Winn Khaing Thann, said in a statement.
Win Myint and Suu Kyi have been detained since the coup, which the military launched as Suu Kyi&#8217;s government was preparing for a second term after sweeping a November election.
The military said it had to seize power because its complaints of fraud in the election were not being addressed by an election commission that deemed the vote fair.

Pro-democracy protests have taken place in cities and towns across the country since the coup. The military has cracked down with lethal force on the protesters, killing more than 750 people, an activist group says. Reuters is unable to confirm the casualties as the junta has clamped down on media freedoms and journalists are among the many people who have been detained.
Alarmed by the turmoil in one of its members, ASEAN held a meeting on Saturday in the Indonesian capital with the leader of the junta in a bid to press him to end the crisis.
ASEAN did not invite a representative of Suu Kyi&#8217;s ousted government.
ASEAN leaders said after the meeting they had reached a &#8220;five-point consensus&#8221; on steps to end violence and promote dialogue between the rival Myanmar sides.

But the junta later said it would give &#8220;careful consideration&#8221; to ASEAN&#8217;s suggestions, which included appointing an envoy to visit Myanmar, &#8220;when the situation returns to stability&#8221; and provided that ASEAN&#8217;s recommendations facilitated the junta&#8217;s own roadmap and served the country&#8217;s interests.
Activists had earlier criticised the plan, saying it helped to legitimise the junta and fell far short of their demands.
In particular, it did not call for the release of Suu Kyi, 75, and other political prisoners. The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners advocacy group says more than 3,400 people have been detained for opposing the coup.
The NUG is largely made up of ousted members of parliament together with politicians representing ethnic minorities and pro-democracy protest leaders.

The coup has also exacerbated old conflicts the military and ethnic minority insurgents who have been battling for years for greater autonomy in frontier regions.
Fighting has flared between the army and Karen insurgents in the east near the Thai border, and between the army and Kachin insurgents in the north, near the border with China.
Clashes have also broken out in Chin State, which is on the border with India, between anti-coup activists and security forces.

For 25-year-old Thet, each morning in <a href="http://globalnews.ca/tag/myanmar" target="_blank">Myanmar</a> brings a constant barrage of what sounds like gunshots, and, more recently, grenades. Yangon, Thet&#8217;s home as well as the country&#8217;s largest city, &#8220;looks like a wasteland now.&#8221; If she were to look outside her window, Thet said some parts would resemble a ghost town, while others &#8220;look like battle zones.&#8221;
&#8220;It feels like a dystopian world order,&#8221; she says during an interview conducted over Signal, an encrypted messaging service. &#8220;The city that I lived in and grew up in is no longer the city that I know anymore.&#8221;

Myanmar, formerly known as <a href="http://globalnews.ca/tag/burma" target="_blank">Burma</a>, has undergone three military coups since gaining its independence from the British Empire in 1948. The most recent began on Feb. 1, after the Tatmadaw leadership refused to accept election results that declared civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi the winner. The military detained National League for Democracy leaders, cabinet and chief ministers, opposition politicians, journalists and activists.
Since the recent coup d&#8217;etat, Thet said it all too common to hear about protesters who end up in jail, some of whom she claims are beaten and tortured before being released back home. But some don&#8217;t come home.
&#8220;We do not know if they&#8217;re alive anymore or whether or not they have been buried and their bodies cremated,&#8221; she says.
&#8220;Lately, we&#8217;ve been hearing about cases of people being burned alive.&#8221;

Government forces have killed at least 753 protesters and bystanders since the takeover, according to the most recent <a href="https://aappb.org/?p=14638" target="_blank">briefing from the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners</a>, which monitors casualties and arrests. The group says 3,441 people, including Suu Kyi, are in detention.
Reporting by the Associated Press found nearly all of the protests have been nonviolent, but as police and soldiers have increased their use of lethal force, some participants have armed themselves with homemade weapons such as hunting rifles and gasoline bombs for self-defence.
Southeast Asian leaders said Monday that <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/p/asean-consensus-myanmar-crisis" target="_blank">an agreement had been reached with the junta chief to end the crisis in Myanmar</a>, but no consensus was reached that would put an end to the killing of civilian protesters.
Phone and internet service has been suspended in major cities. In Yangon, where Thet lives with her family, the internet is shut down at 1 a.m. and comes back up at around 8:30 a.m.
&#8220;Then we hear about what will happen, what happened in parts of our city, the people they kidnapped, the people they shot, the people they killed during the night,&#8221; she says.

Thet&#8217;s experience is all too common for those living in Myanmar. Burmese Canadian Si Thu Naing, who lives in British Columbia, says it&#8217;s been difficult to connect with his family in Myanmar due to the shutdowns, and fears for their safety.
His brother is a journalist, which he says has made his family a target for the military junta.
&#8220;A lot of the media personalities are on the run. They are not living in their own houses or places anymore. They are usually separated from their family because of what they are doing,&#8221; he tells Global News.
&#8220;If they want to arrest somebody, they go into their house and if they can&#8217;t find the person they are looking for then they just grab one of their family members.&#8221;
Unable to ignore the news as conditions in Myanmar worsened, he started a petition. On March 23, NDP <a href="https://petitions.ourcommons.ca/en/Petition/Details?Petition=e-3158" target="_blank">MP Laurel Collins brought that petition to the House of Commons</a> floor urging the international community and federal government to &#8220;act firmly to reject the coup and put pressure on our allies and Asian partners to stop providing arms to the Myanmar military.&#8221;
&#8220;Canadians want our country to be a leader when it comes to standing up for human rights,&#8221; Collins says in an interview with Global News. &#8220;It&#8217;s really important for Canada to condemn violence, to condemn military coups that undermine democracy, especially when there is escalating violence against civilian protesters and media blackouts.&#8221;
Naing&#8217;s petition also demands Canada bar all businesses from exporting arms and tech to the Myanmar military that can be used against the public.
&#8220;We&#8217;re trying to push and put pressure on the government and western countries to do differently this time and hopefully resolve this so that there will be a whole lot more stability over there,&#8221; Naing says.

Since the military coup began, <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/p/canada-sanctions-myanmar-military-coup" target="_blank">Canada has imposed sanctions on nine Myanmar military officials</a> and has <a href="https://www.canada.ca/en/global-affairs/news/2021/04/canada-issues-advisory-on-doing-business-with-myanmar-related-entities.html" target="_blank">urged Canadians doing business with Myanmar-related entities to comply</a>. Foreign Affairs minister <a href="https://www.canada.ca/en/global-affairs/news/2021/02/statement-by-minister-of-foreign-affairs-on-myanmar0.html" target="_blank">Marc Garneau also &#8220;unequivocally&#8221; condemned the junta&#8217;s use of force</a> in a statement on Feb. 28, adding that Canada was considering more measures.
Global Affairs Canada reiterated that the federal government condemns &#8220;the coup and the violence being perpetrated against civilian protestors&#8221; in an emailed statement to Global News, adding that they have &#8220;demanded the restoration of the democratically-elected government and the release of all members of the civilian government, activists and civil society leaders.&#8221;
&#8220;We have also urged the Tatmadaw leadership to provide immediate and unfettered access to Myanmar to the UN Secretary General&#8217;s Special Envoy,&#8221; the statement read.
Aung Naing Thein, who heads the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/albertaallianceformyanmardemocracy/about/?ref=page_internal" target="_blank">Alberta Alliance for Myanmar Democracy</a>, has also requested Canada&#8217;s government take more aggressive against Myanmar&#8217;s military. <a href="https://petitions.ourcommons.ca/en/Petition/Details?Petition=e-3213" target="_blank">His petition was put to the House floor on April 14</a>.
Garnett Genuis, the Conservative MP who brought the petition forward, recalled <a href="https://globalnews.ca/news/5440125/rohingya-genocide-canada-action/" target="_blank">Canada&#8217;s call to action</a> against the Rohingya genocide more than one year after Prime Minister Trudeau’s Special Envoy to Myanmar published his <a href="https://www.international.gc.ca/world-monde/issues_development-enjeux_developpement/response_conflict-reponse_conflits/crisis-crises/rep_sem-rap_esm.aspx?lang=eng" target="_blank">2018 report detailing multiple accounts of mass rape, killings, separation of families</a> and torching of homes and villages.
&#8220;Let&#8217;s not make the mistake that the government made on Burma in the past,&#8221; he says. &#8220;Let&#8217;s be prioritizing this in discussions of multilateral fora now and pushing for coordinated actions in terms of sanctions against individuals and other measures that will force a change in behaviour.&#8221;
But for Thein, the petition is personal. Like Thet, Thein was born and raised in Yangon. He said he wrote the petition in the hopes that it would draw attention to what is happening in his hometown.
&#8220;Every day I get a phone call or internet call, the first question we ask is not, &#8216;How are you?&#8217; Our question is, &#8216;Are you still alive? Are all of my family members still alive?'&#8221; He tells Global News. &#8220;I never thought that could be a normal conversation.&#8221;
Both of Thein&#8217;s parents live in Yangon, as well as his grandparents, aunts and uncles. He says he&#8217;s scared for his family.
&#8220;The military and security force, they come to the streets and then they randomly shoot people indiscriminately,&#8221; he claims, when asked what he hears from his family about the state of Yangon.
Unable to return home, he asked himself: &#8220;As a Burmese Canadian here, what can I do?&#8221;

Thein&#8217;s petition differs slightly from Naing&#8217;s, in that it calls on Canada to impose sanctions against members and businesses who are chaired and assembled by Min Aung Hlaing, the senior general in Myanmar and de facto leader following the Feb. 1 coup.
When asked about this distinction, Thein says &#8220;the more money they have, the more weapons they will buy and then the more atrocities will happen in Myanmar.&#8221;
Even if his petition receives no traction, Thein says he will continue to push for a future where Myanmar is a democratic state.
&#8220;As long as this military are in power, in control and killing people, I cannot stop what I&#8217;m doing here because that&#8217;s not fair for those people in Myanmar who are suffering,&#8221; he says.

For some living in Myanmar, like Thet, the future remains uncertain. Last month, Thet says her neighbour&#8217;s home was raided by Myanmar militants. She claims her neighbour was taken, and still doesn&#8217;t know where he is or if he&#8217;s still alive.
So far, she says she has been lucky. To her knowledge, none of her friends have died. Living with her family has eased her anxiety — at least this way, she knows where they are. But for Thet, every day is a dangerous waiting game, each passing moment more uncertain than the last.
&#8220;So much has happened and yet everything feels so achingly slow at the same time,&#8221; she says. &#8220;At this point, I feel less that I&#8217;m living and more that I&#8217;m surviving and existing.&#8221;
At 25 years old, Thet has accepted that her life could end.
&#8220;I want to be as dispensable as possible,&#8221; she says.
&#8220;Whatever happens: if I go missing, if they end up killing me too, I know the movement will be able to go on as if nothing happened. They may mourn for me, for my friends and family. But the movement itself will be able to continue on because our movement is a leaderless movement.&#8221;

Her actions today may not be the tipping point that sets Myanmar back toward democracy, but Thet says anything that could help future generations of activists is a risk she&#8217;s willing to take.
&#8220;Right now my rights no longer matter. I cannot speak out about what my opinions are without fear of being killed. Police and military can come into our house at any time and kidnap us. This is not the type of life that I want for myself and for other people in my community, not just the youth who will have to carry us in the future, but also the elders too,&#8221; she said.
&#8220;For me, the fight is worth it. Risking my life is worth it because we deserve to live in a free Myanmar, a really inclusive Myanmar as well. So that is why I keep organizing in the ways that I can. We must when we have no other option not to. We have already lost so many people. We cannot make their sacrifices go in vain.&#8221;

A prominent ethnic insurgent group captured and burned down a military base in eastern Myanmar near the Thai border early Tuesday morning, an official from the group said.
Myanmar has been in turmoil since the military ousted civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi in a February 1 coup, triggering an uprising that has seen security forces mount deadly crackdowns against protesters.
The anti-coup movement has garnered broad support across the country, including among some of Myanmar&#8217;s armed insurgent groups which have for decades been fighting the military for more autonomy.
One of the most vocal opponents, the Karen National Union (KNU), has clashed with the military in their territory along Myanmar&#8217;s eastern border for weeks.
On Tuesday, fighting broke out in Karen state near the Salween river, which demarcates part of the border, with residents on the Thai side reporting hearing gunfire and explosions coming from inside Myanmar.
&#8220;Our troops captured the Burmese military camp,&#8221; KNU&#8217;s head of foreign affairs Padoh Saw Taw Nee told AFP, adding that the fighting took place around 5 am and the camp had been &#8220;burnt down&#8221;.
&#8220;We could hear from the other side, we could hear the bullets,&#8221; said Hkara, a long-time resident of Mae Sam Laep inside the Thai border, who is ethnic Karen and only has one name.

&#8220;We saw five or six Burmese soldiers run down to the river and then we saw KNU shoot them but it was very dark.&#8221;
Last month, after the KNU overran a military base in the same region, the junta responded with multiple air strikes at night &#8212; the first use of air offensives in Karen state in over 20 years.
Some villagers had already left their homes for other towns in fear of retaliation from the Myanmar military, Hkara said.
&#8220;Nobody dares to stay&#8230; they ran early this morning already when the fire fighting started,&#8221; she told AFP.
Clashes have intensified in Karen state in recent weeks, displacing more than 24,000 civilians, including some 2,000 who crossed the river to seek refuge on the Thai side.
An estimated one-third of Myanmar&#8217;s territory &#8212; mostly in its border regions &#8212; is controlled by a myriad of rebel groups, who have their own militias.
