A MYSTERIOUS mirage has left Brits “stunned” after it caused strange “100-metre” tall figures to appear above the sea.

Pictures of the phenomenon, posted to Facebook by St Ives Boats, seem to show gigantic figures floating above the horizon.
Witnesses described the objects, saying they “change shape” and added that they looked to be “hundreds of metres tall”.
The touring company were out at sea when they spotted the , on a sea-safari expedition.
It is understood the mirages were in fact an optical illusion called a Fata Morgana.

A Fata Morgana – also known as a mirage – is caused by light rays bending as they pass from cool ground level air to warmer air above it.
The bending of the light rays creates an that makes objects appear to hover above the ground.
This is believed to be what caused the bizarre optical illusion off the coast of Cornwall.
In a post online, St Ives Boats said: “It was surreal seeing these huge ‘structures’ and weird atmospheric changes and we and our passengers were just stunned at times.
“We’re sure that it was a visual distortion of the carrier and others of container ships all of which by this point were many miles away.”
The bizarre shapes conjured by are historically associated with legends and fairy tales.
It has caused people in the past to believe they are seeing fairy castles or false magical lands.
Some individuals, however, had much bolder suggestions as to what the could have been.
The pictures sparked debate online, with Brits chiming in to crack jokes about the .
One said: “It’s just AT-AT walker. Nothing to worry about…”
Another said: “Ghost ships in the mist from years gone past.”
A third said: “I thought it was a bridge being built”
A final simply put: “Aliens!”
