The upcoming action-hero series “Twelve” has unveiled a new poster and stills featuring Sung Dong Il !
Inspired by the 12 zodiac animals of the East, “Twelve” tells the story of 12 angels living in the human world in human form to protect the Korean Peninsula from evil spirits. Long ago, the angels barely managed to seal the forces of evil in the gates of hell through their sacrifice, bringing peace. However, with the evil spirits awakening, chaos returns.
Sung Dong Il plays Ma Rok, the overseer of the 12 angels and the steadfast anchor at the heart of “Twelve.” A human granted special powers and a divine mission, Ma Rok has stood by the angels’ side since ancient times, tasked with gathering and protecting them. In the present day, he works as a detective and also helps resolve issues that arise among the angels.
Director Han Yoon Sun explained, “We created the character of Ma Rok because we felt the story would be more relatable with someone who could observe and connect the audience to all 12 angels.”
Sung Dong Il described his approach to the role, saying, “Depending on the situation, I wanted to portray Ma Rok as both warm and approachable, but also cold and resolute when needed.”
Ma Rok wields a magical cane, which allows him to form protective barriers, battle evil forces, and seal them away. On filming the action scenes, Sung Dong Il explained, “Since the barriers are created with CGI, I had to be mindful of their placement and movement while acting. I discussed and rehearsed a lot with the staff to make it work.”
The stills capture a tense confrontation with dark forces and a moment of fierce inner rage following a shocking discovery—teasing the powerful role Ma Rok will play alongside the angels in their battle to protect the human world.
The newly released character poster captures Ma Rok’s firm sense of responsibility and unshakable resolve to protect both the angels and the human world. The calligraphy in the poster displays the Chinese character for “deer” (“Rok”), symbolizing Ma Rok and reinforcing the stoic aura he carries as he faces evil.
“Twelve” will premiere on August 23.
