The Deputy General Manager of Abia State Environmental Protection Agency, ASEPA, Umuahia Zone, Catechist Ambrose Jonah has expressed worry at the rate of attacks on female street sweepers and other ASEPA staff by some residents of the zone.

This is even as he condemned the action of a disbanded ASEPA monitoring team member, who inflicted machete cut on an Umuahia fake resident, on Saturday.

Jonah who was addressing Journalists in his Umuahia office concerning the Saturday incident, lamented that some female street sweepers and other personnel of ASEPA Umuahia Zone had been attacked by residents while on duty.

“These women sweeping the environment will be sweeping and someone will be messing up the roads and she will be pleading with the person to stop, the next thing is that the person will start beating the sweeper,” Jonah lamented.

The Deputy General Manager disclosed that some residents, out of misinformation or ignorance, had also attacked him in Umuahia in the past while he was on duty.

He urged the towns and villages that fall under the Umuahia ASEPA zone to reciprocate the vision and efforts of Governor Alex Otti for them, by keeping their environment clean.

He explained that the agency does not encourage thuggery or use weapons in discharge of its functions, emphasizing that five suspects, including the former monitoring team personnel involved in the machete attack, are now in Police net facing investigation.

“Am sorry for what happened. The hand is now working after the operation. In as much as I condemn the machete I advise Abia residents that
