The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, has issued a fresh 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to complete the payment of arrears contained in the 2026 agreement reached with the union or face indefinite strike action.
SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, announced the decision during a press briefing in Abuja while presenting resolutions reached at the union’s National Executive Council, NEC, meeting held at the Federal University, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, over the weekend.
According to Ibrahim, although the 2026 agreement clearly outlined modalities for resolving lingering issues affecting members, the implementation of arrears payments remained uneven across universities.
He accused the government of making the payments in a haphazard manner and warned that the union would no longer tolerate delays.
The ultimatum follows an earlier warning issued by the union last Thursday over what it described as delays in the execution of the 2026 FGN/SSANU Agreement.
SSANU had stressed that it “will not accept unnecessary delays, selective implementation, marginalisation or any attempt to diminish the financial and non-financial provisions of the agreement.”
Ibrahim acknowledged that implementation of the agreement had commenced in some universities but remained incomplete in others due to what he described as funding and administrative challenges.
He insisted that the agreement must produce tangible benefits for members.
“Agreements and NEC resolutions must translate into concrete action and measurable benefits for our members,” Ibrahim said.
The SSANU president directed branches and zones nationwide to closely monitor implementation, maintain accurate membership records, document cases of non-compliance or victimisation, and submit timely reports to the National Secretariat.
