At least two soldiers and two police officers were involved in a physical altercation at a well-known market in Jos, the capital of Plateau State, leading to heightened tension among traders and residents.
The incident reportedly took place at the GSM center in the Hamaz area. While the precise cause of the confrontation has not yet been officially confirmed, eyewitness accounts shared on social media indicate it began due to a disagreement between a soldier and a roadside phone vendor.
A Facebook user, Bello Lukman, who shared details of the incident, claimed that the soldier became upset after the vendor allegedly damaged his phone rather than repairing it. According to the post, the soldier attempted to apprehend the vendor, but a policeman present intervened and suggested that the issue be taken to a police station.
“The soldier called some of his colleagues who arrived in a Hilux, assaulted the policeman, injured him, and took his gun,” Lukman wrote.
He further mentioned that police officers in the area were later withdrawn, while traders hurried to request the presence of additional security personnel to prevent further violence. He also asserted that a potential bloodbath was averted as the policeman had previously cocked his gun.
In response to the incident, the Plateau State Police Command confirmed its awareness of the clash and stated that the situation had been brought under control.
A statement issued by the command's public relations officer, SP Alabo Alfred, noted, “The Plateau State Police Command is aware of the recent altercation between police officers and military personnel that occurred on December 1, 2025, at Hamaz, Ahmadu Bello Way, Jos.”
He emphasized that the incident was taken seriously and is under investigation, adding that “the security personnel involved in this disgraceful act have been sanctioned appropriately by the management of their respective agencies.”
SP Alfred also reassured residents that measures have been implemented to prevent a recurrence of such incidents. “The misunderstanding between personnel of the two responsible security agencies has been properly addressed, and steps have been taken to ensure it does not happen again,” he stated.
