Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu has announced plans to enforce the state law banning extravagant pre-wedding activities, citing rising marriage costs as a factor discouraging young people from settling down.
The governor made the announcement on Friday during the commissioning of the remodelled Zawiyatu Sheikh Aliyu Bunza Jumu’at Mosque and Islamiyya School in Sokoto.
He said some families demand expensive ceremonies that place heavy financial burdens on couples, contributing to an increasing number of unmarried men and women in the state.
Governor Aliyu warned that some parents and guardians routinely flout the law, prompting the government to engage stakeholders to review the regulations and ensure compliance.
He added that the high cost of marriage could push some youths into immoral behaviour and called on Islamic scholars, traditional rulers, parents, and guardians to support enforcement of the law.
