THE BEST time to water your lawn for luscious green grass this summer has been revealed by a soil expert.

For green-fingered Brits, achieving the ultimate lawn can be an ongoing mission.

And it turns out that it’s not just how much you water your grass in the months that makes a difference – it’s when, too.

Lawns, of course, need the right amount of water, sunshine and diligent care to thrive. And ensuring you give your grass its H2O fix at the right time is key.

According to Steve Peeler, internal agronomist at Simple Lawn Solutions , there is an optimum time frame during which you should whip the hose out.

The soil and plant pro revealed that it’s best to get out in the garden to hydrate grass between 6am and 10am at this time of year.

This is because the early morning hours allow grass to soak up the liquid they need before the warmer midday sun begins to evaporate the water.

Steve told House Beautiful : “Evapotranspiration, or the process by which water is transferred from the land to the atmosphere, happens less during these hours, and the grass benefits more from irrigation during this timeframe.”

Because of this, it’s also advised to avoid spraying grass during the afternoons or particularly of weather, as water will be wasted.

Steve says that watering your lawn after a rainy spell is a no-go, as well.

Overwatering can seriously hinder your grass’s ability to grow into a green and luscious lawn and instead encourages things like and mushrooms.

He suggests waiting until water has been absorbed into the soil anytime it has received an inch or more of water.

“Soils should drain between six inches and 24 inches per hour to ensure standing water is reduced and eliminated,” the expert added.

If you’re wondering about the best way to water, Steve hails sprinklers as his favourite method.

“The water droplets are distributed more evenly and provide overall coverage,” he said.

“Manual sprinklers are great to use if monitored on a strict schedule. Localized dry spots or ‘hot spots’ can be hydrated with the hose by hand-watering.”
