A Sharia Court sitting in Fagge ‘Yan Alluna area of Kano State has sentenced a young man, Ahmad Sa’id Dandinshe, to 60 strokes of cane after finding him guilty of stealing a ram meant for Eid al-Adha sacrifice.

The incident occurred in the Dabai area of Gwale Local Government Area, where the defendant was accused of stealing a ram belonging to one Maryam Hamza, a resident of the community.

During the hearing, the prosecution counsel, Barrister Zaharaddin Mustafa, informed the court that the accused committed criminal trespass and theft, acts which contravene the provisions of the Kano State Sharia Penal Code. When the charges were read to him, Ahmad pleaded guilty.

Presiding judge, Ustaz Umar Lawan Abubakar, thereafter sentenced him to six months imprisonment or a fine of ₦15,000 with 30 strokes of cane for criminal trespass, and another six months or ₦15,000 fine with 30 strokes for theft.

The punishment was carried out within the court premises.
