The motorway is shut down between Junction 27 and Junction 28, near Standish, Greater Manchester, due to a “serious collision.”
Lancashire Police, emergency services, and National Highways Traffic Officers are currently on-site.
In a statement, National Highways said: “The M6 in Lancashire is now closed in both directions between J28 at Leyland and J27 at Wigan due to a serious collision.
“The closure is expected to last for several hours.”
Initially, the southbound carriageway was closed following the accident.
Subsequently, the northbound carriageway was also blocked as emergency services attended to the scene, leading to the announcement that the motorway was closed in both directions.
Both southbound and northbound diversions are available for drivers, who are advised to plan accordingly.
“If this closure affects your planned route, please allow for additional travel time. Consider re-routing or delaying your journey,” a spokesperson advised.
