A legal practitioner, Ibrahim Wali, says the Clerk of the Senate lacks the power to take a position on the suspension of Kogi Central senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

The lawyer also described the senator’s suspension by the Nigerian Senate as unconstitutional and legally void.

Wali made this statement on Thursday, while responding to questions in an interview on Arise Television.

He stressed that the lawmaker should immediately resume her duties in the National Assembly, emphasising the legal invalidity of the Senate’s action.

“The role of the Clerk of the Senate is limited to receiving records and communicating orders, minutes, votes, and proceedings.

“For the Clerk to make a statement claiming he was informed without any supporting documentation of a vote or proceeding by either the Senate leadership or the House as a whole is legally defective. This is because the Clerk lacks the authority to take such a position,” he said.
