Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has pledged to seek justice for the 13-year-old rape victim, Ochanya Elizabeth Ogbanje.
Ochanya passed away in 2018 after suffering from Vesicovagina Fistula (VVF) as a result of repeated sexual assault.
Her death sparked public outrage, leading to a series of protests in Benue State and across the nation under the hashtag #JusticeForOchanya.
Reports indicate that Ochanya was allegedly raped for several years by her aunt’s husband, Andrew Ogbuja, and his son, Victor Ogbuja.
Andrew Ogbuja, a lecturer at Benue State Polytechnic in Ugbokolo, and his son Victor were accused of abusing Ochanya starting when she was just 8 years old.
They were also accused of engaging in both vaginal and anal intercourse with the young girl, which resulted in her developing Vesicovagina Fistula (VVF).
The victim was laid to rest on November 2, 2018, in Ogene-Amejo Village, Okpokwu Local Government Area of Benue State, surrounded by mourning family and friends.
Recently, reports surfaced indicating that the suspects had been spotted in Lagos, which has reignited anger among Nigerians.
In response, Senator Natasha released a statement on her social media page Thursday morning, expressing her concern upon learning that the suspects had been released.
She urged the family of the deceased to submit a petition to her office so she could advocate for the case.
She stated, “Seven years ago, the heartbreaking story of little Ochanya left me devastated.
“I believed the perpetrators were incarcerated. Unfortunately, they were discharged and acquitted.
“The family of the late Ochanya Ogbanje should write a petition to me at:
“Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan,

National Assembly Complex,
Abuja.
“For the sake of our children, I stand for justice for Ochanya.”
