Chibuike Azubuike, known as the “Obi of Lagos,” was apprehended in September by law enforcement for his alleged role in a fraud-related incident. He has since issued a public apology to the Lagos State Government and the Oba of Lagos.

Azubuike previously ignited controversy with his announcement to host an Igbo New Yam Festival in the Amuwo Odofin area of Lagos State. This initiative faced backlash from local residents who perceived it as an imposition of Igbo cultural practices in a region that is predominantly Yoruba.

In a public notice published in a national newspaper, Azubuike expressed remorse for his actions and committed to behaving responsibly in the future.

“I, Mr. Chibuike Azubuike, hereby extend my sincere apology to the Oba of Lagos, the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Government, and the wonderful people of Lagos State for my ill-considered proposal to hold the New Yam Festival on Saturday, September 13, 2025, in the Amuwo Odofin area of Lagos State,” his statement read.

Azubuike also clarified that the contentious title “Obi of Lagos” was not self-assumed but rather a result of a printing error.

“The label ‘OBI OF LAGOS’ was a typographical mistake made by the printer,” he explained.

He emphasized that the decision to cancel the planned festival was made of his own accord, refuting claims of being pressured or politically influenced.

“Contrary to suggestions that my decision was politically motivated, I am not a politician. However, should I choose to enter politics in the future, I would align with the ruling All Progressives Congress to contribute to the advancement of Lagos State,” Azubuike added.
