Tragic Accident in Lanzarote: Second British Tourist, 54, Dies After Falling 20 Feet When Wooden Bannister Gives Way

A SECOND British tourist has died almost a year after the two holidaymakers fell over 20ft after a bannister collapsed in Lanzarote.

Thomas succumbed to his injuries after nearly ten months in hospital.

He and his friend, 56-year-old Darren Silcox also from Cwmbran, Gwent, fell into an atrium stairwell at the Galeon Playa Apartments in Costa Teguise on October 25.

The pair fell between 15-22ft after a wooden banister “collapsed” on their balcony, an inquest heard.

Silcox was pronounced dead at the scene.

Thomas’s family were told by doctors in October that he may never recover.

He was transferred to University Hospital Llandough, near Cardiff, in November but sadly died on July 10.

The inquest into Silcox’s death heard he died from traumatic brain injury, skull fractures and skull lacerations.

The proceedings were adjourned until April 14 next year when a joint inquest is expected to be held.

Following Silcox’s passing, local councillor David Daniels said he was a “great guy”.

Silcox was a much-loved shopkeeper who owned two stores in Pontnewydd and Five Locks.

One shopper said: “This is terrible.

“It is a family store and everyone knows them – what a shocking way to go.

“He was always very hard working.”

Locals say his wife Kim died a year after an illness. One said: “They have two children who are now left without parents – it is tragic.”

‘s Civil Guard has launched a probe into the circumstances surrounding the incident which happened on October 25.
