A FOOTBALL match in Australia was interrupted for the most hilarious reason as seagulls flocked into the pitch amid a crunch A-League clash.

Melbourne Victory hosted the Newcastle Jets on Friday at the AAMI Park but the game descend into chaos in the second half.

A raft of seagulls invaded the pitch down ‘s half in the first minute of stoppage time.

There were so many birds that Jets ace Lachlan Bayliss struggled to whip in a free-kick down his left.

It didn’t take long for this bizarre incident to make the rounds on social media with fans going crazy.

One enthusiast tweeted: “I hope they all paid for their tickets.”

Another commented: “Nature taking over.”

A third wrote: “Someone should bring out a bucket of chips to distract them.”

This fan joked: “‘s Birds was evidently based in the A-League.”

And that one added: “Amazing!”

Victory and the Jets went on to play out a 2-2 draw in Melbourne.

Eli Adams opened the scoring for Newcastle after just 19 minutes but Melbourne ace Charles Nducka turned the game on its head with a brace.

However, Adams sealed his own double one minute before full-time to save a point for the visitors.

And none of the two teams seemed too put off by the funny incident as it is actually quite common for seagulls to interrupt games in Melbourne.
