The Rivers State University Teaching Hospital has unveiled the first-ever Foetomaternal Medicine Unit in Rivers State and one of the very few in Nigeria.
In a statement by the hospital management made available to journalists, the newly-opened unit at the hospital is a step towards advanced healthcare for expectant mothers and their unborn children at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital.
The Foetomaternal Medicine Unit inauguration ceremony, which was held on the 20th of October, 2023, marked a historic moment in the region’s medical landscape, with the aim of providing comprehensive care to pregnant women and their babies, addressing a wide range of complex maternal and fetal conditions.
The Acting Chief Medical Director of RSUTH, Professor Chinzindu Alikor, expressed his enthusiasm about the new unit, stating that the Foetomaternal Medicine unit will be a center of excellence in Nigeria, adding that resident doctors will be trained, and impactful research projects will be carried out.
Professor Alikor commended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, for his commitment and ongoing support to improving healthcare delivery for Rivers people.
According to the CMD, Professor Mkpe Abbey, a renowned Professor of Foetomaternal medicine and community obstetrics will be leading the unit.
